Post are saying that other Championship clubs as well as Barnsley were sniffing around, I can't believe we weren't aware of someone like that on our doorstep, maybe we had asked the question and been turned down? A while ago he was retweeting Rovers fans asking the club to give him a trial, so I doubt he would have turned us down then, but maybe we didn't move fast enough and with Championship clubs sniffing around, you couldn't blame him for choosing any of them ahead of us (if we did indeed make a late move to approach him). City seem to be better in this area of non-league recruitment than us now, where as it used to be us sniffing out these sort of gems. Antoine Semenyo and Saikou Janneh are making excellent progress. They had Kacper Lopata on trial before Brighton stepped in to sign him. Lopata played a few games for Clevedon Town in the Western League this season and was previously at Shaftesbury Crusade. Since joining Brighton he has marked Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood (one of the best youngsters in the country) out of the game to help beat them in the FA Youth Cup and then recently made his debut for the Poland U21s. A month or two ago they also had the promising Clevedon Town pair of Sam Larkins and Ryan Jones on trial for 6 weeks. Considering the fact I know Sam personally I can put my opinion forward on him. He's a great player, I went to go and see him play in the FA Youth Cup game against Manchester City and he was superb. Cleared a goal off of the line and was comfortably in my opinion Clevedon's best player. Jack Sell i'm not too sure about, he was very poor in the game I saw him play in, missed an open goal and it did seem like the only trick really in his locker were fake shots that he repeatedly tried over and over again to no effect.

I think both Larkins and Sell will play at a higher level eventually, but how high I'm not sure. I'm hoping both of them step up to Southern League level next season (fingers crossed with my local club W-s-M) and test themselves at a better standard to continue their development.

Me personally I believe Sam has a higher potential than Jack. I think Jack thrives against teams that aren't very good but if he comes up against better opponents he'll struggle. Another player I'd look out for is Will Mann there too, albeit again in the Clevedon ago he was repeatedly skinned by their winger, but their winger was D'Margio Wright-Phillips so I'm not sure you could expect much difference. He's a right-back and received MOTM 2 of the 5 times he's played. Will be interesting to see how all of them develop.

18-year-old striker Henry Landers at North Leigh would be worth a trial this summer. He previously played for the Oxford City youth team where he scored 65 goals in just 50 games and joined North Leigh in the summer where has has scored 23 goals in all competitions (14 goals in his last 14 games) in his first season of senior football for a struggling side. Stepped up three levels to sign for National League side Maidenhead United. www.pitchero.com/clubs/maidenheadunited/news/dev-lands-landers-2421206.html

AFC Fylde left back Zaine Francis - Angol looks like a quality player. Can play left wing as well but as Kelly has fallen out of favour and THD doesn’t seem able to play at full throttle,he looks like he could slot in very nicely at left back or further forward. He’s quick, skilful and can overlap to great effect.25 years old and only contracted until Dec 2019 ( wiki info so could be bollocks).Maybe a Lee Brown with pace and the ability to go past a man? A fully fit THD and this lad could be an awesome combination but I think he’s definitely worth taking a good look at.Should be performing tomorrow night in Fyldes play off game on bt sport,so a good opportunity to make an initial assessment on him.

Went to this too, great game. One of my childhood best mates, Ash Nevins, is the Clevedon coach. Can't find the name of the lad online but the right-sided CB for Clevedon was brilliant. Likewise, Sell looks decent but we've already released him, no?

Btw on the topic of players/scouting, I'd like to see us keep eyes on the market in Scotland and Ireland. The latter in particularly as Preston have shown there's tonnes of great players in the Irish league, available for cheap and would likely be willing to come to us due to location, league status and probable pay rise.
One Scottish player I'd LOVE us to go after is Lawrence Shankland at Ayr. Scored 29 in 33 last season and so far has 28 in 24. Just recently turned down a move to the Belgian second tier and said he's "motivated by game time, not money" so perhaps something we could offer that Championship clubs can't. Either way, probably out of our league but hell of a goalscorer.

Haven't you heard? Our scouting radius only extends 100m outside of the Ricoh Arena Id prefer we stuck with that to be honest - past recruits from Jocksville haven't been very successful! Only because we've signed washed up players like David Clarkson, Garry Kenneth and Derek Riordan. There are plenty of young, talented players in both the Scottish and Irish leagues that will make good signings for us, not every signing will work out but I feel our recruitment needs to widen the net and take a gamble every once in a while as we've tended to stick with mostly established L1 players recently.

Steven caulker now playing in Turkey still young I know he played for that lot too. Was recently involved in a minibus accident that sadly took the life of his teammate at Alanyaspor, Czech International Josef Sural. He's a good player, had his problems but is still fairly young, I recommended him a while back when he was a free agent. I'd imagine he'd be on a fair bit in the top flight of Turkish football.

I wonder what he earns in Turkey and would that be a barrier to a return to the UK in league one? May come down to what motivates him, returning back to England or cash?

You say that, axe, but I imagine his pay packet wasn't that big up at Dundee (though admittedly that was the contract before). Might just be on a normal wage but fancied living in the sun and not the rain, who knows. Would be a good signing for us if we could ever get him (hypothetically). On loan at Liverpool not all that long ago.

Has represented Gloucestershire U18 Representative side this season and highly rated. And yes, we've previously released Sell, but still worth keeping an eye on. We released Chris Lines in the past as a youth and then brought him back into our setup and we also had Tyrone Mings on our books as an U18. See here: gaschat.co.uk/post/499932

I still wish we had gone for Gavin Whyte (now a full Northern Ireland Int.) and Mark Sykes (Northern Ireland U21 captain) who I was banging on about for ages that eventually joined Oxford. Both look very promising. Apparently Karl Robinson will be looking to tap into the Irish market on both sides of the border this summer. www.oxfordmail.co.uk/sport/oxfordunited/usnews/17581031.oxford-united-looking-at-targets-in-both-irish-transfer-markets-karl-robinson/Ones I personally quite like in Northern Ireland are Liam Hassin (Larne), Ryan Carmichael (Portadown), Callum Ferris (Portadown), Kofi Balmer (Ballymena United) and Caolan Marron (Glenavon). In the Republic, Andrew Lyons (Bohemians), Ali Reghba, (Bohemians), Sean McLoughlin (Cork City), Thomas Byrne (St Pats), Mikey Drennan (Sligo Rovers), Trevor Clarke (Shamrock Rovers), Aaron McEneff (Shamrock Rovers) and Robbie Benson (Dundalk) are decent.

Another side note but what the hell do you do for a living pirate? Surely scouting should be in your arsenal mate

Gonna get some coaching badges done ASAP and have started to get the FA Talent ID certificates too and will be signing up for the PFSA qualifications in the future.

I'd get Larkins in to train with our development lads to see how he compares for sure. I'll also be recommending him to the new W-s-M management team whoever they are (Stuart Sinclair's brother reportedly turned down the role of manager), if they aren't already aware of him.
