Genuine open question to be fair .....
Guy said to me this weekend that we had a ' lucky manager' who had got by on some great player squad camaraderie and momentum and a few teams bottling it in L2 when we got promoted.
I pointed out that that it was our Management team that set the pace, the standards and were deserving of the outcomes...the retort of " this season will be his biggest test" sat with me though and I wondered what the opinion of the forum might be.
DC has been up front to be fair to him .....
1. He has declared we are going to ' have a real go' 2. He has stated he wants a top six budget . 3. He has openly said he likes putting himself under pressure. 4. He has given himself the task of 10 new additions to a new look squad.
Im sure there are loads of other things he is / has done and I for one am absolutely behind him as I know many are on here ....Is this his biggest test and are we expecting more from him and the players than ever before ? I probably am and that will make it one hell of a roller coaster ride this season .... not sure yet whether to be excited or seriously worried ( especially given the slow intake so far) That comes with the territory of being a Blue though !

Probably akin to the Conference in terms of expectancy/pressure.
League Two was a pleasant surprise and last year anything but relegation was good enough IMO.
This year - with a so say top 6 budget - and yes, he will be expected to challenge for a playoff spot at the very least I guess.

In the conference it was fair to say BRFC would have had one of the biggest budgets and as such one of the better squads (squad being the key) the pressure was there but so were the tools. In league two the budget probably wasn't one of the top budgets but I expect it was top half ,the pressure was less but still on. Many Rovers fans see league two as well below the clubs expected average standard as so hanging arouns wasn't really wanted. The squad again was key to the success. In league one fans were more apprehensive as the squad had come a long way and perhaps most hoped Rovers just wouldn't be in a relegation dogfight. The squad...at its limit...gained 10th and flirted with the playoffs for a while....the pressure was different last season 50 points was the pressure mark. This coming season is different again. The squad had reached its zenith .The pressure this season is will a half new squad "gel" and achieve at least as good as last season. With a higher budget a 10th or 11th place finish will be seen as a failure (although in reality its not and it may take a season of treading water before the squad can kick on) I don't think fans are demanding promotion or the playoffs but I get the feeling the expectancy is to be in the thick of the race.
edit: So its not his biggest test ,its just another different test.

If we signed Lumley & Sweeney, or similar players in the summer we would have probably reached at least the Play offs I wouldn't call it lucky DC had managed a team with two consecutive promotions and a good try at reaching the Play offs in his third season. If DC does have a decent budget to work with I can see us having another decent season. Although good, or bad, news regarding the UWE could have a big effect on our Play Off/promotion prospects this season.

Not his biggest test in my eyes - that'll come when he's managing us in The Championship whilst we're still hosting games at The Rickety Mem !

No I think the Conference season was his biggest challenge. Of course he would've had one of the biggest budgets in the division, but much of this was probably taken up by players already at the club. He had to sign players with very little, if any, reputation at all even at conference level. He had to turn the club around at its lowest point. He had to work with a very amateur set up and background team and had a fan base that had started turning on the club. He had to completely transform the squad from a team of has-beens who were here to pick up their pension and didn't give a sh** about the club to a team of genuine grafters who gave everything for the shirt on limited wages. And he had to do all this with the pressure of knowing he took the club down, and it could've been dead and buried had it not bounced back in its first season in non league.
This year we have apparently got a bigger budget and there is a level of expectation. The last two seasons there has been very little pressure and we have overachieved. This year is a bigger challenge than the last two but I don't think DC will ever face a bigger test as a football manager than our conference season. UTG!

I strongly disagree that hes been a lucky manager, utter rubbish hes been a brilliant manager. I do agree that the season coming up is very tricky and a big test for him. It looks like hes staying and im suprised because in many ways this was the right time for him to go with his reputation and legacy intact. However championship clubs are going the way of the premier league with foreign coaches and players which means opportunities are rare at bigger clubs these days.

I think conference season was probably the biggest test, but this season is next in the list.
Given money in the summer the expectations are sky high and we're all expecting a promotion push after last seasons 10th place.
He's certainly put himself under pressure with his interviews, but if that is how he works best them fair play to him!

Lucky manager Jesus wept. No season will ever have as much pressure on it as the Conference season, IMO. That really was s*** or bust - was massive for our future and ensuring we didn't get 'stuck' down there for years. For sure there is a level of expectation from the fans this season (created by DC's quotes) and the squad overhaul creates its own pressure, but would it be catastrophic if we made the playoffs this season and lost, or even just missed out on the playoffs? Not for me. As long as there's clear progression then I'm happy.

I think we got lucky at Wembley - and him upstairs was looking after us on the last day of the season against D&R and with Accrington Stanley not winning. But it's all about the season as a whole - the Wembley win was pivotal - and was probably a defining result in DC's career.

Puddy was very lucky not to have seen red which would have seen the odds stacked against us.
