Quick Report
The Team
Good performance. Worked really hard to make sure they got this one done.
The gaffers plan
Interested to see Sinclair play out on the left. It's not a natural position but he's such an annoying little bugger (to the opposition) he gives no change. The system worked. Very attacking and there were a some really good moves. Would have thought we'll need more steel against tougher midfields but can't knock anyone today.
DC was also very eager for Nicholls to get a goal. I heard him instruct Brown to 'let Nicholls have it' when we got a threatening free kick.
Smith
Did well. Off the line quickly. A thinking keeper. Happy with this addition.
Leadbitter
Crunched early on. No disaster but we know he's got a couple extra gears. Good to get minutes after an injury.
Lockyer
At it. Did well- pairs with Sweeney well.
Sweeney
Solid enough. A couple of big tackles. Some really thoughtful distribution. Some stray passes.
Browner
Some fans gave him stick on Saturday, I was not there so can not comment. But he was good today. A wonder-assist and f'all came down his side from Cambridge.
Lines
Solid. Allowed to play deeper with Sercombe and Sinclair in the side. Sercombe is perfect foil for Lines. At one point when Sweeney broke forward- Lines covered well after instruction from DC.
Sercombe
Confession: Hated Sercs' at Oxford. Found him irritating in the home defeat two years ago. I was jealous. Plays a simple but affective game. Solid technique. Eager to play short 5 yard passes and even more eager to run for the return. One of the best home debuts I've seen.
Sinclair
Will never let you down. At one point took the central striker position to hold the teams shape. Also played a delightful pass in the second half after moving into midfield. I want us draw the sh** from the south and Sinc's to score the winner. That's all I ask..
Bodin
Just class.
Nicholls
I do not want to put the pressure on and say this is it: 'the 20-goal man.' However, when I watched James the thoughts were that he's a useful player but won't score 20. Nicholls COULD. Perhaps, not this season but certainly one season.
Harrison
My man of the match. Did everything I want. There was so little of the bad and lots of the good. He GOT in the box! I agree with others that he needs to do ugly bit more but I really believe he's doing this. The biggest improvement he can make is- getting in the box. That's where he'll score.
Gaffney
Must be one of the best at flick-ons and chest passes in the league football. Glad he's in the squad this season. Good competition for Ellis. We need one of them to go up a gear this season. Could be both, neither or either but I believe at least one will.
Partington
Hard to judge. The game had got a little flat and . Took up good positions but was often not played through.
Moore
His best performance as a sub? He hasn't been the best sub in the past but he did well today.
Cambridge
Woeful. 11 strangers. The only downer on performance. Were they just sh**? We'll find out I guess.
