With UWE almost certainly dead in the water I was curious about what we previously had planning consent for in terms of a redeveloped mem so did a little digging on the council website and found this. I'd be happy with something similar tbh. Reference: 08/00061/F Application Received: Mon 07 Jan 2008 Application Validated: Mon 07 Jan 2008 Address: The Memorial Stadium Bristol Rovers Football Club Filton Avenue Bristol BS7 0BF Proposal: Amendments to regeneration of existing stadium to provide a new 18,000 seated (18,500 Capacity) stadium and ancillary accommodation, hotel (84 rooms), 99 student flats (546 rooms), restaurant, convenience store, offices, associated car, coach and cycle parking, landscaping and associated works. Status: Decided Decision: GRANTED subject to condition(s) Decision Issued Date: Mon 17 Nov 2008 planningonline.bristol.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=documents&keyVal=JUC1VEDN00K00

Remember that one. Unless there was to be underground parking below the stands there was never going to be enough parking on site. At the time it was suggested that deals were done with industrial estates and schools etc within 15 minutes drive of the ground to turn their parking facilities into free matchday park and ride facilities to alleviate the potential street parking issues that would upset local residents. If they are considering previous designs that they know made it through the planning application process then maybe they should also consider the matchday shuttle buses idea too. The other idea with those sites was that programmes and fifty fifty tickets could be obtained at these sites with the sellers themselves able to board the last scheduled shuttles at say 2:30.
If we're staying then that chap Carstairs and the "Friends of the Memorial Ground" group who were campaigning that the Mem remain a sports use memorial and heritage site rather than a supermarket must be happy now eh?

On almost every other thread people bemoan the lack of matchday parking as a deal breaker. I don't know of many other grounds that have allocated matchday parking. People will have to use the bus, or walk. Like they do everywhere else.

The oddity is many assumed that UWE would be easily better for this. 1) the traffic around Frenchay is woeful when it gets busy. 2) the parking would cost. 3) more would have to drive, being out of town. I think overall the 'parking and traffic' would be a marginal improvement at best. Having been to reading many times and seen the congestion on matchday (doesn't get bad at other times) it's not true that the UWE would be a car owners dream. 100% need facilities for driving. Some require it, But people who can should walk. Applies to the Mem.

Some of the more enjoyable trips I've had to Rovers games have been to grounds with no parking. Fulhsm, Chelsea etc the worst, delay wise, being Derby, Reading and Oxford which do. The problem isn't parking the problem is Bristols' inability to provide decent public transport.

Someone compared it to Charlton but Charlton had a train station right outside.

I dont see the big problem with transportation. We get by at then moment with crowds upto 12k. The additional 6-8k in the case of a sell out would be covered by aditional busses, a park and ride (as per the transport assessment) and a small increase in the parking radius.

The sh** are getting what around 19k? Transport is not a problem for them as 80% of their supporters turn up on sponsored sunshine buses.

There's new park and ride sites popping up, most likely has to be the new one at Stapleton (which is only supposed to serve the Metro Bus, but I'm sure something could be sorted). Also direct busses from Parkway and Temple Meads.
The Mem redevelopment is perfectly doable, its a matter of cost, which with all the digging out and reduced capaicity will be a considerable hurdle.
