I'm just hoping its all in hand Steve ... have to say i have lost confidence in DCs and Hamers Recruitment ability, scouting of a player and getting them in the building. I am naively waiting for that big spend on a hungry striker but in my head can sense its simply not coming. There is some real quality out there, people on here have shown that but i fear its over looked as DC knows best!! Before people start banging on about Broadbent we only got him down to a lucky turn of fate not a meticulous scouting network looking for potential talent. I just wish we had been told honestly in June that there is no real money, we will get what we can and this season will be a battle to better last. Deep down I probably knew it even though I hoped we had turned the corner as a club, sadly the corner was simply a roundabout!!
FFS! 6 weeks ago DC was a hero for signing a new 5 year deal. 2 games in and he is useless and has no recruitment ability.
I fully expect this post and a few others to be dragged back up in January so we can all have a good laugh at the doom mongers.

Whatever position we are in come January, wrongly or rightly you can still argue the position would have been even better had DC got it right from the start.
DC's teams just don't ever seem prepared come day 1; either he hasn't got good options in needed areas (left wing, strikers, GK etc) or players are brought in late and take time to settle and gel together.
Of course he usually gets things right in the end but why not get it right in the summer and make us a real force?

Dc has made his decisions of who he has signed and in many ways will stand or fall on them. But they are not cheap options imo. nicholls 250-300k 3 year deal sercombe 100-150k 3 year deal smith 2 or 3 year deal slocombe 2 year deal sweeney season long loan all these players will be on fairly high salary in my view. We have also signed several development players and various coaches. I think most of the budget is spent now so its just a case of the players settling in and proving they are good signings. ps... the contract lengths are speculative of course. I don't see DC handing out 3 year contracts like that. 2 more likely. possibly, but the club have moved into different territory with regards to signings this season and paying big money for a 23 year old striker usually means 3 year contract imo but of course we dont know.

Sure, whatever we do, if we lose, you can argue that it could have gone better if we'd done exactly what you want. I call it the Scholes/Butt Sophistry. Basically, whatever Man Utd did, however much they achieved, however they dominated English football, whenever they didn't get three points some Mancy expert could always say something like 'I would have picked Scholes instead of Butt' (or vice versa) thereby proving that they were a better manager than Sir Alex.

I really would wonder if we are at present trying to sign any players or just waiting until the last few days of August. It seems strange that transfer dealings seem always to be rushed on the last few days of a transfer window especially when it is clear to see we are still at least three players short and by waiting are throwing points away. "Nothing happening in the pipeline to be honest with you," admitted Clarke. "We're still after a couple of players but we'll see what happens and develops towards the end of August but I'm more concentrating on my own squad, we've got a big week of games coming up."Darrell Clarke issues clear message as Bristol Rovers try to kickstart season against Bury FC "We put that on the back burner to a certain extent, and concentrate on these next three games. "
Clarke was also adamant that the back-to-back league defeats has not changed his intentions in the transfer market in the next fortnight. "No, it has no bearing whatsoever. The manner of the defeats, we dominated against Charlton for periods against ten men and then conceded a goal which wasn't a goal," said Clarke.
"It's a tough one really," said Clarke. "I'm only just getting used to the one at the end of August," joked the Rovers boss. "I think the end of August for me as a manager suits me. But there's pro's and cons for both, I suppose it depends what club you're at, if you've got an injury crisis in the middle of the season you don't want a window."Clarke said defeats to Charlton and Peterborough in the opening week of the season have had no bearing on his transfer plans "Peterborough, I know what went wrong there. You just move on to be honest. The two personnel I would like to bring into this squad are well documented. A defensive midfielder and a left footed wide player." "No change, but then again I've got good players so you never know what happens leading up to the window."The summer transfer window currently closes on August 31 for Football League sides, but the EFL are considering a draft proposal which would close the window before the season starts. Clarke believes that different clubs will want different closing dates.

Butt ahead of Scholes?? You must be joking! Nicky Butt was England's best player at the 2002 World Cup (according to Pele). "It was more amazing for my family than it was for me because realistically he was talking crap," Butt said relatively bluntly.

I can see us making all sorts of excuses when we don't sign anyone - 'I'm happy with what I've got' and 'I'm saving money back for january' blah blah blah.

I'm sure as the perfectionist DC seems to be he will have been wondering why we start seasons poorly himself.
You cannot argue against a good start breeding confidence and put you in a much better position moving forward to achieve our goal. Also, other potential signings (loan or permanent) suddenly become attracted to a club flying high even after a few games.
DC has said today we are looking to overachieve this season, despite us being told we have a top 6 budget? These mixed messages don't help matters.

This is football. We could win our next 6 games or be sat on 6 points now and lose the next run of games. Theres no point fretting about the past just the next game.

Ideally you would like to start and finish the season strongly and have the inevitable wobble somewhere in the middle. But like you say this is football!!
I just feel DC doesn't help himself with his slow summer activity, he may have his own reasons but that's just my thoughts from afar.

We've had terrible starts the last few years, went up twice. That's just the way we do it.

Did he not say before the season started that the team can't keep overachieving. Perhaps he's resigned now like many of us to the fact that we are at our maximum level with what we have and it's pointless to even contemplate a sustainable life in the Championship for many years to come. As long as he has a squad capable of maintaining a position in this league without spending much money it will be deemed a success. Like most of us, less than three months ago he had visions of leading his team out in a couple of years time into a brand new state of the art stadium, with a strong back up infrastructure of staff and training facilities - he will be absolutely gutted I'm sure.
