One of his biggest revenue losses will be the number of people who go to the pubs on Glos Rd rather than the bars at The Mem (I'm one of them). Even the televised game on Saturday lunchtime attracted 50 fans to The Anchor - 300 yards away from the ground, but clearly a more desirable boozer than we can manage at The Mem (which was also showing the game)! He's got his work cut out! I attended the Mem on Saturday to watch the game, it was quite well attended considering it was live on Telly and many could have gone to their local or watched at home. With the inclusion of Butcombe to the choice of beers at a resonable price and "irenes" kitchen producing reasonable fodder it wasn't an unpleasant experience. I am sure there are many things our new Commercial Director can do to increase revenue, non-matchday is the likely place where he can make a difference. Good luck to him I say

Yes he'll be expensive but when you say a project worthwhile marketing on, surely BRFC are one, aren't they? I presume you don't mean a new ground because that may take another 6/7 years and I can't imagine you would argue that we wait another 6/7 years before we appoint a Commercial Director are you? I just wonder how much more value you can get out of the present set up at the Mem, we can hardly get many more fans though the turn styles so have to increase spend per fan which won't be an easy task if we're stuck as being a mid table div 1 side? I agree we've needed a decent CD for years, I'm just surprised at the high profile ( and I assume salary) of the new CD. Perhaps the bloke fancies a challenge

Boosting revenue will not be easy as probably half of us are in the just managing category. Since I retired, I no longer buy a programme, 50/50 draw tickets and a pasty and get a concessionary ticket and limit myself to the one pint. I save about £15 to £18 a game compared to what I spent when working. I still enjoy my football but as much as I love the Rovers it's will unfortunately take some effort to get more money out of me.

Tight git! True I'm afraid and I have the pint in the Annex where I get a 50p a pint OAP discount. Now that's an idea to get be back to the club bar particularly if they served some decent real ale instead of that fizzy rubbish that gives me wind.

Generally the discount in the Annexe is 30p a pint (applicable to CAMRA members and bus pass holders), they are now serving a half decent pint of Butcombe in the Mem for a similar price in all the local pubs so that in my opinion negates your statement there. Generally they have a "happy" hour before the game making your lunchtime pint even more affordable Nobby, I am one of those who drink one pint pish three types these days, I would be bankrupt in no time

I guess his role will include non-football income streams, advertising, sponsors and just generally improving the commercial profile of the club. Yes, it will be expensive and we will feel it because we've been "rag bag" for so long! I suppose some will say we need to speculate to accumulate, and that includes the salary! He will need to recoup his salary and should do I would have thought. Just another sign of us becoming more professional and trying to catch up with others. UTG!

Yes it looks absolutely great and very professional. It will also look bright and airy because it's new and in a fairly rural area, out of town and attractive to corporate stuff. So it will be easy to attract the companies and audience which will give mega bucks to have events there. I suspect that most of the Rovers fan base would hate to be in an out of town location which will be more difficult to get to. I wouldn't mind because I come from a distant anyway and need to park when I arrive. For me, it would be really convenient but to the greater majority of our fans it wouldn't be so convenient. I bet Brighton have got away with such a rural location because since it opened they've had nothing but success and have probably attracted a whole new set of fans. Had they been always in Leagues 1 or 2 it might have been different. But companies will see the attraction of it as a location completely apart from football. So they've probably grown their non football income. We could do that but I bet some fans would hate the location which would allow us to do that. UTG!

For Commercial Director i read Chief Executive That's a different role than was advertised for the job? What's happened to Steve Brookfield as he joined Dubey & Curran and just disappeared.

The things to take from the podcast albeit a few years old are...
1) The inclusion of free bus and rail travel to home games with a season ticket.
This will be a major achievement if done at Rovers . It will be the biggest counter to car parking fears and traffic congestion by locals. This will be one of the first things to come up during planning for the New Mem. It also means (unless parked at a park and ride) fans can have a drink at the game if they wish.
2)More involvement with fans ,bringing fans closer to feel part of the club. Creating a community feel.Which also then lets the fans advertise the club to others in positive ways.
3) Increasing season ticket sales. Ok the facilities are not upto much at the mem compared to Cardiff and Brighton but its selling what Rovers do have to its best ability. On a side note: I would say the east terrace is always the last to sell out and has lowest figures/capacity in general. This is where the data collection comes in. Use the data to offer targeted cheaper season tickets and supply the facilities that target audience prefer.
4) free wifi at ground. Any need to comment ?
5) pre and post match entertainment. If I was wealthy and owned BRFC I might look to buy the Victoria pub....or others in the locale. That way fans still get their prematch pub but the club get the income....

There's stuff we could do at the Mem, which has a car park of course. We have some decent size rooms, and if we were to knock through the two Clubhouse rooms into one, that would be an ok size conference room. Not megabucks events, but I'm sure there's more we could do with the space with a little investment.
