Lockyer, sweeney, bola, partington and ollie clarke are all young players and quite inexperienced at league 1 level although tom and ollie have racked up many appearances for their years. Clint hill has just signed a short term deal at carlisle from rangers. John o"shea cant get a game at sunderland now but someone like him or hill or another old head i reckon would be a great help right now for us. We havnt really replaced lee mansell in my view,he was real leader on the pitch.

Agree Paul.
Locks best games are when someone is leading him. Hartley was good for Locks last year until he got injured. I was surprised we didn't retain him last year, more for his experience than anything else.
Locks is a good defender no doubt about it, but not a real leader.

He needs to be dropped. But we all know it won't happen.

Spot. on. we are a soft touch at the back, i sit not far out from the edge of the box. there is no noise in amongst our back 4.
I don think Lockyer is playing great anyway, so think he is due some time on the bench. Give Sweeney and Broadbent a chance.

Easy to say drop him but who's going to replace him, Burn's out injured and Broadbent is another inexperienced defender, who's also a left footed CH like Sweeney.
Although not sure how you can blame Locks for the first two goals, the first unlucky the second down to Sweeney going AWOL?

It's a myth that you can't play two players of the same strong footing together, Pallister/Bruce, Adams/Keown, Terry/Carvalho, Terry/Cahill, Ferdinand/Vidic, Yates/Twentyman.
Organisational skills are not motivating words, it's instructions to do something, Browny man running behind you, Leads cover behind me, Locks ball!
Now review the first goal last night on the video, 4 of our men jumped for the ball, not one of them won it bar Locks flicking it on to set them up...........where was the talking and organisation? This is different to motivating

I've been saying this for ages, they are in the centre of the pitch so it shouldn't matter, same as the central midfielders

Partington rightly has had plaudits for his attacking work but he should be doing better last night. First goal he should be dropping off as a full back that's his job round the back, albeit a bit of bad luck / confusion / poor communication.. Second goal was absolutely hideous. The winger is facing the corner flag and is allowed so much space to casually turn back inside and then even more time on to his better foot. We need to show more desire to defend and do the dirty work otherwise it matters not what we do at the other end.

With the exception of Ellis I dont think our front 6 offer a great deal of defensive cover.Stuart Sinclair's ability to track back is a real miss for us and I think without him 4-3-3 away from home is just asking for trouble.
This is why I am surprised we have not seen 3-5-2 more to nullify the opposition"s attacking threat more.

In the second half of last season when we tightened up so much, it was Lumley who was doing the organising. He didn't stay quiet all game and was constantly giving orders to the rest of the team and especially the centre backs, much the same way Mildenhall did for us. This season, whilst I think Sweeney, Lockyer and Slocombe can become good enough, I have never known such 3 crucial positions be filled with 3 such quiet people.
So whilst I agree that someone like Lockyer (as he is also captain) should be more vocal and organising, Slocombe needs to up his communication as well. He should be able to see everything going on in front of him and as an experienced keeper, he should be organising his defence a lot more than he does.

Spot on re Lumley, he was shouting all game and talking to the defence. For me it's a given your keeper helps organise his defence. It's a collective but all I am saying I would expect my captain to play a big part in it as well. Your central defender leading your defence also talks to who is right in front of him and that will be the midfield asking them to protect his defence.

I don't think DC will relieve TL of the captaincy or admit he got it wrong making him captain, unless TL surrenders the armband he's captain I'm afraid.

Well something's got to change around the back four pretty soon as DC can't keep justifying his selection and credibility if we carry on as we are - back end of last season plus this season so far we have shipped goals for fun. He was ruthless with Mildenhall at times and needs to be the same with others because it just isn't working.

I don't understand the fuss about who's named captain. It's just a ceremonial thing and should'nt change how someone plays. It seems to be an English obsession. A lot of attention is given to the England national team captain, while a lot of other countries give it to their player with the most caps that game.
I do like Lockyear but he hasn't been in great form, though I don't think he'd play any differently or shout more/less if someone else had an armband on.
Maybe I'm missing the point, maybe he feels an extra burden as someone fans/DC look to, I'm sure they all hate it when we concede goals!

Another mistake by Lockyer today, DC called it sloppy defending, seen too much of it from Tom this season

Good performance and a good win would have been more but for an outstanding performance by their keeper who made four very good saves. We really need to get some consistency going now and an away game next it's vital we pick up at least a point , if we can do that then win our next home game that will leave us looking in good shape.
