Can’t agree with the managers comments tonight. He said the same shape as Northampton but in the last 2 games we have let in 5 with two different defensive pairings. I don't get what that has to do with anything though? For me that's just an excuse. You coukd play the same shape for 46 games and get 46 different results. Just because we won 6-0 against a useless opponent doesn't mean we should stick with the same gameplay every week. We actually used to do better away when DC made lots of changes including formation.

We've got a younger squad now so results like last night are bound to crop up occasionally...if two of Mansell, McChrystal, Easter, Mildenhall and yes even Lawrence were on the pitch last night they'd have shut up shop after the second making sure we got in at half time with something to salvage. Less old heads on the pitch and we still go gung ho till half time and are already out of sight. Its swings and roundabouts as the old legs would tire badly in the second half and we'd probably still have got beat by four if they hadn't been subbed off, but you get the drift. More nous on the field may have stemmed the flow and given us a platform to fight back from, more energy on the pitch and occasionally we will just be trying to win the second half because we've thrown away the first.

Defending is an art and focusing on central defence partnerships is a cheap shot and naivety.
Defending is a team effort.
Oxford game was a classic example. The inexperienced eye picks out Broadbent or Bola and their exchange of passes inside our half as being the fault. The experienced eye picks out the way we lost the ball cheap on the edge of the Oxford 18 yard box, the way we allowed Oxford to play out from the back, the poor positioning of holding midfielders behind the line of play. There were a series of errors before Broadbent/Bola got involved.
As the old expression in football goes, if your not in possession, be in position. It doesn't matter where you lose the ball, it could be deep in the opposition half, but from that moment you are defending and all players have to switch their focus and get back to their position and shape as quick as you can by the shortest route and get two banks goal side of the ball. In an ideal world you expect pros to do that without experienced generals out there calling the shots and ordering players around. Sadly responsibility and leadership doesn't come with every pro footballer for their wage packet and two good generals, one in midfield and the other in defence, is usually enough to keep the whole unit well oiled and working properly.
4-3-3 worries me. Ok logically, yes it should keep the opposition back 4 on the half way line and stop full backs getting forward. Do your maths and that leaves you with the numerical advantage of 7 v 6. Sounds good, but it doesn't always work. Fullbacks can lack protection and if the midfield 3 over commit or don't work well together, being caught on the counter can be a problem.
Put short, I think our defensive problem lies somewhere between leadership, 4-3-3 and the discipline on shape when not in possession.

Ian you talk some good stuff but forget the inexperienced eye or experienced one, again today as most weeks now the captain made another mistake again for the oppositions goal.
We all know he’s undroppable but for 12 months now I’ve been saying he simply is not good enough to start in our defence let alone organise it.

At the AGM questions were asked about Lockyer being captain, the general view was he is not captain material. In so far as urging players on and doing all the shouting a captain needs to do. Marcus said they should ALL be captains, but I think he agreed that at the moment we do not seem to have much choice. After the meeting I had a word with him and he pointed out we have no Mansell this term, and although he was not captain we miss him in that respect. Also said he thought Tom seems to have something on his mind that maybe is effecting his performances. Also his contract is up at the end of the season. Would being in the Welsh squad be something to do with it?

Another 4 tonight let in, we’ve all seen it haven’t we SteveK
Big problem for DC tonight...........he just said after the game we were bullied and were weak.
Charlton x 3 Peterborough Newport Portsmouth Wigan Shrewsbury
And so many more but one person plays in all of them, he is bullied and he’s weak, he’s not Elliott or Macca, he’s the fans favourite, but long may Captain Calamity remain, and we will keep letting in goals.
Let’s all applaud our DEFENSIVE ORGANISR 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

If and only if he should be dropped its not tom lockyer that picks the team and your lack of respect for him is a disgrace imo.

At the moment were getting punished for every mistake when things start to go wrong. In top teams when someone makes a mistake other players often cover to prevent a goal. I dont think were quite the collective team we have been under dc right now so i do broadly agree with your original post.

We all know he’s undroppable but for 12 months now I’ve been saying he simply is not good enough to start in our defence let alone organise it. In my opinion, too much is made of the captain role. You should expect 11 players on the pitch taking responsibility and being vocal to turn the game plan and everything rehearsed in training for that particular match, into a reality in that 90 minutes. Sometimes as a club you have that born leader and undropable player, sometimes you don't and instead pick your 11 and give one the armband for that game. I don't think we currently have an obvious captain and we haven't replaced the leadership of McChrystal/Mansell/Mildenhall, all big characters in the spine of the team. Not so sure this is Lockyers fault, if it wasn't him being a not obvious captain, it would someone else doing it and taking the flack. in the meantime, regardless of piece of material, Lockyer has to play on merit just like everyone else and I'm sure he knows that. As I've said before though, defending isn't just about a back 4. Watch any goal we conceded and rewind 30-60 seconds of play and look for the faults the culminated in the goal scoring opportunity. Then see how many players need to hold their hand up.

Yes. A Frankie Prince giving some stick in midfield wouldn’t be bad either. UTG!

Those three players hardly played last season though so there must be more to our defensive failings than those three leaving, I guess if Locks is the weakness this season we'll find out next Saturday as Broadbent is now up to speed, league football wise, so it's now a case of Rollin or Burn putting in a better performance than Locks as of late to prove he is the weakness, although i fear another heavy away defeat to a top 6 side.

And it was worrying that last season we hadn't replaced that leadership, now we still haven't this season. I would play Ollie Clarke in front of the two centre backs in a holding role.

The likes of Clarke and Sinclair are taking us nowhere. They have clearly reached their level and although fans favourites for many Gasheads , IMHO we need better. January as far as I am concerned can not come quick enough. Whether our Manager has the ability to bring in better, that's anyone's guess.

A quick look at the player ratings on this forum will reveal how poor Ollie Clarke has been this season and that was from lots of others who have attended games not just me.
