Its a funny old game. For so long this season we have had terrible problems at centre-back with sweeney and lockyer badly out of form, broadbent looking raw and struggling v bradford and wimbledon and johnny burn a car crash that did happen. But right now craig, broadbent, sweeney, lockyer and menayese[at swindon] all look the part.

For all we know lockyer could be out for the season. Or leaving at the end of the season ?

Seems unlikely given he just signed a new contract.

True, although I'm pretty sure TL is just injured

I assume this is a vote for the next game rather than for the whole season. When Lockyer returns and is match fit he will no doubt sit on the bench first match but then most likely walk straight back into the first team alongside Tony Craig. I see Broadbent and Menayese filling in when Lockyer is either injured or playing for Wales. Also for when there are a lot of games over a short period of time allowing a fitter team to play each match. Tony Craig may also not play midweek games allowing maximum recovery time for an older player. Sweeney most likely will not feature much more as plans have to start evolving for next season now. I disagree about Broadbent. I think it is very obvious that Clarke rates him very highly. I think it's more likely as of now that Craig would drop to the bench, but Craig may just make himself unstoppable in the meantime. I have no idea what DC will do when Locks is back but I think they will all feature heavily. Sweeney has had his moments this year, including a couple of vital goals against Blackpool and Doncaster. But yes, he seems unlikely to get much more of a look in. Yes its said with no disrespect to Sweeney who overall has played very well for Rovers and has always put the effort in. It will be of more benefit though to the squad long term to give more game time to Tom Broadbent.
Tony Craig was brought in for his leadership and organisational skills as well as playing ability. It was that leadership and organisation that has been lacking in league one in defense. Both TL & TB will learn from playing alongside TC.

Tom Broadbent seemed a bit accident prone last night; saying that the whole side was a bit nervy. Rochdale (apart from their early poor decision making in front of goal) didn't play like a relegation threatened side.
DC summed it up on radio that we basically rode our luck last night; but he couldn't fault the players application.

Was it the pitch or the fact Rochdale played in a virtually all black strip as the number of passes from TB & LS etc which went straight to the opposition players last night was unusual,

I voted Lockyer + Broadbent originally and now I have seen a bit more of Craig, I would probably stick with it or maybe even change things around and give Sweeney another chance. Craig reads the game well but he isn't especially great in the air, quite slow and such a small back two with lockyer hardly gives me confidence, Broadbents distribution and physicality is what is missed and I can't understand why he is kept on the bench.
I understand that Craig has come here to play and obviously DC wants his experience on the pitch so might it be better off to play him left back? I'd be interested to see more of the Broadbent/Sweeney partnership. It worked in the second half of the Blackpool game at home and again recently against Doncaster away. Both players deserve a chance back in the team and honestly I think they are not any worse than the two CB's currently in the team.
This isn't a response to Saturday btw, watching on ifollow it looked like Lockyer had a fairly decent game (penalties aside), I just think that with the playoffs seemingly out of sight it may give us an opportunity to try something new because there are definitely improvements to be made regarding our back four.

We'll get a chance to find out on Saturday if we do play better or worse without Locks and with Broadbent or Sweeney alongside Craig?

We'll get a chance to find out on Saturday if we do play better or worse without Locks and with Broadbent or Sweeney alongside Craig? Sweeney got called up for the Republic of Ireland u21 squad. I was mainly talking more about the games after that when everyone is available again for the final 8 games of the season.

If Sweens is not interested in coming here on a permanent deal, I would let him go back to stoke, as the chances of us going up are slimmer than frank skinner!

Tom Broadbent plus one for me. Currently conceding too many goals to headers from centres into the box. Craig or Lockyer to partner Broadbent, if Lockyer leaves in the summer, then the decisions becomes that much easier.
