Puddy really isn't very good, his fault for the first. Harrison had a good header very well saved by their keeper, worked hard. Trialist won a lot in the air and was composed with the ball at his feet, looks like he can play football. Surprised White didn't score when he raced through towards goal. Broom looks a pretty handy prospect down the left. Brunt was stood next to me in the stands, seemed perplexed as to why he wasn't included, more to it though I guess. Puddy has the hands of an elephant. McCrystal also had a header well saved. Broom needs to shoot with his left foot as at least the ball would travel towards the goal line rather than trying to get it on his right all the time giving the opposition time to strip him of the ball. For a fox in the box (supposedly) White very slow off the mark.

Disappointed Preston did not get at least half of the game. We had a couple of good headers saved, but apart from that FGR were the better team. Looked a bit like men against boys. And why were there no team sheets/pasties? Rivers, glad you have posted!!

It says Lucas came on with half hour left? Is that Jamie Lucas? No idea but the lads on loan at Mangotsfield played (Greenslade and Thomas) and Pierce Mitchell started who is on loan at WSM like Lucas so it could well have been him.

It says Lucas came on with half hour left? Is that Jamie Lucas? Yes - all our lads loaned to part time clubs train with us on days they do not play or train with the teams they are loaned to and can play for us in friendlies or reserve games. Harrison and White have both had less match minutes than Lucas and so needed the start more than Jamie but it was also useful to us to see how Jamie is getting on with the confidence of regular games and goals under his belt at W-s-M. In effect he has gone ahead of Ryan Brunt in the pecking order because he is a similar style of player to RB but is getting games and scoring goals and is match fit, whereas unfortunately RB did not get off to the start we all wanted him to, stopped being an automatic member of the 16 and therefore gets little opportunity to regain match sharpness and confidence. It is players like Brunt that the modern set up of no regular reserve football combined with "squad game" with multiple substitutes does the most disservice to. When we had Warboys and Bannister, John Rudge had to bide his time in the Football combination side but he was often playing against young up and coming defenders of Arsenal, West Ham and co week in week out and so was ready to step in. Likewise Steve White when Randall and Gould were the pairing. Once out of the combination the south west counties league still gave the "stiffs" more regular outings than the fringe players get now. Better that they are loaned out than kept in a permanent state of non-readiness ...unable to perform to anything like their best because of the lack of opportunity to play proper testing games.
