My understanding was that the "assault" mentioned came about as he was in a panic, and wanted to get away. Met him at the start of last season, and he came across as a very polite young man. As has been said, we all make mistakes in our youth, he has been judged and I hope that the club will now help him to learn from his mistake and move forward.

Sounds perfect for our lightweight defence.

Deleted multiple mentions of his address from this thread for obvious reasons. It's printed in today's Bristol Post. Always thought it was a bit strange when the press do that when someone is sentenced.

I thought this kind of behaviour was consigned to the John Ward era Situations aren't always as clear cut as a couple of lines in the local press make them appear.

Lots of people make mistakes, I have. One moment of madness that isn’t that serious shouldn’t mar your career. People are far to quick to judge. Most people have had the red mist come over them at some point, it’s how you deal with it and how you mature. You never know what is going on in someone’s life and head at that moment in time[.br]You could always be a famous cricketer and get proved not guilty even with video evidence......not that I’m suggesting anything.

Can his 250 hours unpaid work include playing for us? This has been the case with some other professional footballers that have similar unpaid work conditions set. Not forgetting the significant community work that a number of our players already do.

"Assault by beating" is a rather misleading legal term - it is the lowest form of common assault, and covers things such as pushing somebody, and they then fall over. Which is something that might happen if somebody was in a panic about a situation which they didn't know how to deal with.
Unfortunately the terminology does tend to conjure up an image of somebody being beaten to a pulp in my mind.

Bang on, and also means that injury caused (if any) is transient or trifling (otherwise Assault occasioning Actual Bodily Harm would be charged):
An assault is committed when a person intentionally or recklessly causes another to apprehend the immediate infliction of unlawful force. A battery is committed when a person intentionally or recklessly applies unlawful force to another. Where there is a battery, the defendant should be charged with ‘assault by beating’. (DPP v Little (1992) 1 All ER 299).

Merely touching a person can be construed as an assault if it is unwelcome. Hang on-perhaps that's why women get all upset at Henbury when he gropes their arses in the pasty queue. It all makes sense now!
