Thanks Steve for another in depth analysis. I largely concur.
Nichols playing is for me like starting with 10men. We all want him to get going, but there comes a time when you have to accept you made a mistake. The trick is not to keep making that mistake.
Yesterday he fluffed his main chance (again) and another half chance header soon after.
We'll see how he links up with another partner if we sign Walsall fella. Another chance. We'll see.
I thought we conceded the match too easy, too early. Yes the goal was poorly defended (again) and it's deja vous, but I my reference was to the set up of formation and the team choice within that.
It looked like a 4-4-1-1 with Bennett just behind Nichols, but after a more conventional 4-5-1.
This was a mistake, imo. It allowed four massive defenders in effect to mark Nichols, which of course is ridiculous. So 3 admirably done the job, allowing their number 3 to get forward and support dembele (10) and was no coincidence was involved in build up for second goal.
Apart from the physical disadvantage, Nichols was hardly given a numerical chance v 16 & 5 and even though Bennett tried to get forward to support, Rodman, Lines, Upson were far frequently too deep to lend effective support in a first half I felt we surrendered the initiative too easily.
The second half was better for us because we played a more conventional 3-5-2 with lively oreilly and a much improved mensah leading the line to metaphorically prove attack was our best form of defence. Like Steve said, box to box pretty, final ball lacking. But we can pick some positives:
Statistically we ended up with more shots and corners.
We made their centre halves do some work, because they could have fallen asleep first half and got way with it.
We scored from an unlikely source.
We ended the game strongly which is encouraging regarding fitness.
James Clarke was finding space as a third striker along their defensive line, an interesting tactic. Shame we didn't exploit it.
But by then, I honestly felt we had lost the game.
I think to look at dc tactics at the start, as opposed to how we finished the match is to why we lost yesterday. That's it dusted for me, carry on making the same mistakes and will see the same results.
