Bit late. The time to get him was when he was at Dover in our conference season (who have a good record with strikers...)
But anyway... We'll just spend more than we could have.

His record in professional Football is similar to Bakayoko.
Its still pretty much scraping the barrel IMO.
2 goals in 28 games for Gillingham.
0 goals in 12 games for Barnsley (Albeit in The Championship)
16 in 63 for Shrewsbury which is pretty much 1 in every 4 over the last couple of years is his best ratio.

This is more like the signings we should be going for not a Walsall reserve player

I wouldnāt say so, at Gillingham he was still young, he then went into non league and proved himself to be a natural goalscorer. At Barnsley he didnāt get a chance and now at Shrewsbury, heās finished their top scorer in a team that finished third. I donāt see how we can do much better tbh without spending absurd amounts of money.

Bakayoko's 5 years younger and has scored more league goals at 22 than Payne did. Yet Bakayoko was/is terrible, while Payne all of a sudden is just what we need?

This would be a par signing. Number 9 wise: Gaffney upgrade. Harrison downgrade. Heās a little more mobile than the average league one 6ā2 target man. better finisher than Ellis

Served his time in non-lge (5 yrs!) - should have gone to Lge 2/ Lge 1 when on fire at Dover, but Barnsley took a punt that didn't seem to work out. I followed his progress (or maybe lack of). Good move to shrews.

If Bako doesn't want to join us it doesn't make any difference where he scored 1 or 20 goals last season? If he did have a change of heart and joined us now you can only imagine the stick he'd get if he want on a Nichols like barren spell!

I never criticised us trying to sign Bakayoko, for what itās worth I saw potential. Going from the last 5 years though, Payne does have the better goals to games ratio, Bakayoko has never scored more than 5 league one goals in a season and I think itās unfair to discount the goals Payne scored in non league out of hand. On one hand Bakayoko is younger but on the other Payne is 26 and (youād hope) is entering his best years as a footballer and at the moment I think most of us want a striker who is going to make an instant impact rather then one for the future.
