leadership has nothing to do with defending Leadership has everything to do with defending and defending is not our problem. Scoring goals is our problem and you’re wading into Tom Lockyer! into his leadership skills yes - defending no - he’s average to good at that! To me he doesn’t inspire the rest of the team!

They are all professional footballers, it's their job to take responsibility for their own performance to deliver the Managers instructions. Who wears an armband should be immaterial. Other players will be leading without being the named captain. Its the laws laws of the game that require a captain and nothing else. It's worth taking a look to see what the laws of the game require a captain to do. I guarantee you it's nothing to do with tactical issues or leading the side from a footballing point of view.

True to a point but are you saying Hollaway and Campbell didn’t inspire or lift the rovers team of the time when needed? Gerard at Liverpool, Lampard at Chelsea ? If all a captains role entails is to toss the coin then give it to Payne at least he would be doing something worthwhile.

It’s primarily about working with the referee and having the temperament to do that. Any player can be barking orders and inspiring without the need to wear an armband and many do.

They are all from a different era, the only natural leader on the pitch is Craig, but not sure what we'll gain replacing Locks with him.

Especially as I saw he was partly at fault with conceding the goal.. What strip him of the captaincy because you think he was partly responsible for the goal yesterday? A cross that was in the air a long time and headed in three yards out - perhaps Bonham was more at fault but despite recent errors he remains untouchable to most fans. Speaking more generally it baffles me why some fans are so against Locks. I think they'll regret it when he goes. He never hides, puts his head in where it hurts and never gives up. Surely plenty more scapegoats ahead of him this season?

You don't need to be wearing a bit of material around your arm to inspire others. England's team at Euro 96 had Pearce, Southgate, Adams, Ince, Platt and Shearer - I can't even remember who wore the armband but whichever it was I bet it didn't stop any of the others of showing leadership and inspiring others.

That is why I said I agree to a point, almost anyone in the team can do what you suggest. A captain is usually chosen to be an influence and leader on the pitch and someone to turn to for encouragement when needed not a church mouse.

I know that!!! But your captain isn’t usually a mute is it? They are leaders! Rovers have no one not even their captain which is odd.

Locks seems to talk quite a lot on the pitch as does Craig. We probably don't have enough leaders in the squad as a whole - should be 3 or 4 at least. I'd be interested to know what the staff and players at the club think of his leadership abilities, probably a lot different to those on this thread.

If you think of a proper tosser in this current squad, Payne is your go to guy. Like your thinking.

My point was that a captains role is more than just tossing the coin and talking to the ref as Stapleton suggested. Of course their should be eleven leaders on a pitch but that’s not going to happen, some for whatever reason need reassuring, encouragement or a point on the right direction and if you can’t rely on your captain then there is a problem.

I thought they were almost equally at fault, but Locks tracked the fellas run from outside the box and never really got near him or the trajectory or the ball, their fella did and showed more determination and scored. Well deserved him with a sublime cross by Jacobson. But, Locks has been culpable before in matches, ie Pompey at home where Curtis scores to claim all three points? Lockyer as captain is a mistake i m o, when we went 1-0 down yesterday I was hoping more of a bulldog come on guys roll sleeves up get stuck in captain leadership...... No. We saw nothing a captain should be after his mistake. We saw nothing at all after we went 1-0 down. Poor captaincy..

I agree with you but I have learned something from this thread which I didnt know before...that a captains job is only to communicate with the ref and say heads or tails at kick off. There you have it.

Whatever you think about captains etc - we certainly need a few more leaders - people who are going to take the game and the lads by the scruff of the neck, inspire and motivate.
