I saw him at Eastville playing for Stoke in the cup game as already mentioned, and saw him as a child win the world cup - brilliant keeper, wonderful character. RIP Gordan, truly one of the greats We had beat Manchester United the round before meeting Stoke, we beat them at Old Trafford and Dick Sheppard saved a George Best penalty, was it Harold that scored the winner? Stoke totally out played us, I think we lost 1-4 ? Lost 2.4 remember it well stood on the muller road end in the rain, fantastic seeing Gordon Banks play at Eastville

I think the Stoke game was the year before? I think we beat QPR 1-0 to set up the tie? I’m probably wrong though!!

Sad news yesterday regarding the passing of a goalkeeping legend, Gordon Banks, the greatest keeper to wear the 3 lions’ shirt and will never be forgotten. Obviously, people will recall the famous save from Pele in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, however, I had the privilege of seeing the maestro replicate that save in Stoke's 4-2 win over Rovers at Eastville in November 1971, on their way to their League Cup triumph over Chelsea. Unfortunately, I do not think there is any TV evidence of but I will always remember it. Does anyone else remember it?

I remember watching from the North Enclosure and seeing Harold Jarman cut in from the left and hit a shot I was convinced was destined for the top right corner. Until a flying Gordon Banks turned it behind for a corner. I also remember being so tightly packed in, that when the crowd moved you went with it regardless of choice. The capacity at the time was 39,000 - where the other 5,500 would have gone doesn’t bear thinking about.

Apparently Gordon Banks was once asked how he thought his side would go on against the current England team. "Well, we would give them a hard game and maybe win one nil, " He replied. "I think it would be more than one nil, you're doing your side an injustice, " the interviewer replied."Yes, " answered Gordon, "but half of us are dead and the rest are getting on a bit. UTG!
