A good choice, captaincy once on the pitch is irrelevant really. Leaders will lead regardless of who’s wearing an armband all the skipper does whilst on the pitch is the coin toss
His biggest role will be being a go between for the players and the manager, he’s popular in the squad and isn’t the type to down tools or revolt against a manager imo which is what makes him the correct choice.
Captaincy in this country is massively over rated, also don’t buy it making him undroppable for the reasons stated above.

I see this written a lot but I think it generally comes from supporters who don't have a Steven Gerrard or (and I'll wash my mouth out after this) Roy Keane type in their team as captain.....no offence intended!

Yet do you think they would have played different without the armband? As I said leaders will lead regardless of having something on their arm, Tony Craig wouldn’t play any different with the armband the same way Ollie won’t.

Is this true? Would a team with Roy Keane be any less effective if he were not the captain? I'm not sure myself, hence the question.

Yeah, I tend to see our captain as someone who represents the club the most off the field and represents what the club is about. Someone who would be involved in our community work. Best to have a local or someone who has come through the ranks, and who has a decent amount of appearances, someone who feels an affinity for the club, and who understands it. The on-field stuff doesn't have to be the same. No one ever thought to themselves on the field, 'I'd shout at this lady garden for not doing his job properly, but I haven't been made captain, so won't bother.' Also, with the new 'the captain is the only one allowed to interact with the ref' idea, maybe you would want someone a bit less Roy Keane, to do that job. I suppose if we had Gerrard-like inspirational player, who was excellent anyway, and who thrives off of being made captain, inspires the whole team, and drives them to success as part of his captaincy, it would be mad not to appoint him, but otoh, we'd just have to appoint a new one at the next transfer window, anyway.
