It doesn't seem like the 'right' thing to do, but from a purely financial point of view it is probably worth getting rid of the Development squad and every team below it that costs any money. Instead, turning to a model that relies on a first team squad of mostly free transfers and the occasional fee paying transfer and the staff immediately surrounding it.
Ollie Clarke made his debut in 2011, Tom Lockyer in 2013, but no one since then has emerged from the development squad to become a first team regular. Over the last decades we have 'lost' a small number of promising youngsters poached by Premier League clubs, with minimal financial compensation, but the numbers are small and in no way cover the costs of the activity. Possibly Alfie Kilgour will be the next that does come thorugh - I hope so, but it still doesn't destroy my argument.
I'm pretty sorry to arrive at this view, but we would be better off letting others do the hard work of developing players - instead picking up first team players on the market. At least until we are on a properly sound financial footing.
That would fly in the face of everything Wael ever said when he first took over. Focus on youth, evolution, sustainability, ya da ya da. It's a good mantra, and if they have ANY clue how to run a football club whatsoever, and ANY idea what they are doing, then removal of the youth teams and Dev Squad would be totally and utterly wrong in my view. Mind you they already trimmed that side of things when they promoted CH to assistant manager without bringing in a replacement DS Coach. If they cut out the youth team and the development squad and associated staff, cut all teams medical staff and go NHS that would hopefully reduce costs. Even more could be saved if fans were to vote for a player manager and let the manager and assistant manger drift away. More savings if we ground shared with the Mangoes, Bath or Yate, true car parking fees and bar takings would be lower but this has to be offset against lower outgoing costs. Then we could probably attract top players from the Western and Southern leagues paying top dollar wages at far less that current contracts. Any thoughts on this?. Any news on the CEO being made redundant as I would like to apply for the job and put my views on the way forward to the board.

Same difference really. Most of the players that appear in the development squad are U23, apart from one or two in need of game time. Having said that, I've just spotted this section on the official site, has it always been there or recently added?: www.bristolrovers.co.uk/teams/u23-team/

You've asked the same on the GC thread, why's it so vital you know who's leaving? This is a forum and someone has asked a question? Why does that bother you enough to put a negative spin on it? If your not interested in it then don’t respond to it. You don’t have write some sh** on here...

Any news on the CEO being made redundant as I would like to apply for the job and put my views on the way forward to the board. My post may have read like that, but I really don't think we need to go quite that far!
However, we all realise now that there is no Al Qadi money tree. What money is spent needs to be spent wisely to maximum effect. Wael's initial enthusiasm for developing our own youth as a sustainable model for the club is flawed logic in my opinion - at least from a purely financial point of view. Rovers outgoings far exceed our income from the development level and below. The majority of transfers in the division are free, with 'star players' costing ~£250k or less. All this when our investment in youth squads over the years has benefited Chelsea, Arsenal, Brighton, Norwich and Wolves more than it has us. Good players have left with pennies coming back in our direction.
But I'd also say that the investment in backroom staff, which increased massively following the Al Qadi takeover, was over done. A bit of sensible pruning is the right move in my opinion.

Just in response to my own posts regarding lack of info coming from the club, I would like to say thanks to the club for posting the article about the academy manager leaving. Shows that the club are indeed willing to post articles about the not-so-good as well as the good stuff.
Now I will wait to see if they do the same for the other departures.

Out of a sense of morbid curiosity? No, because I'm interested to see how the back room staff is being restructured. In modern day football the backroom staff play a significant part in the success of a club. So it is interesting to know where we're at with that, and what changes are made and for what reasons. P.S. remember when we hired the sports analyst, medical staff, defensive coach, Dev Squad manager etc etc. The club announce their arrivals, I'd like to see them announce their departures too.

You mean we're going to have a 'Rovers Got Talent' programme on tele? What 'talents' do we have in the fanbase? At one time we had enough 'talent' amongst our supporters to run a small industry very successfully. People with experience running SME businesses up to large corporates. The problem was that rather than accepting the advice in the way it was meant the powers that be saw them as a challenge to their authority at the club. Sometimes the best leaders are those that will listen and accept advice.
