The last thing I want to do is write any of our signings off because they all look decent on paper but I can’t help but feel underwhelmed by our transfer business so far. All bar one of our signings have been in defence and while we may have a couple of decent right backs now, is anyone expecting Jaakkola and Davies to be an upgrade on Lockyer and Bonham? Tyler Smith looks like a promising youngster and I think he’ll be decent for us but it’s still only a loan, if he does well for us, he’s not ours and if he doesn’t get played often like Telford and Jakubiak it’s been a bit of a waste of time. From Coughlan’s comments about Marquee signings and getting rid of Payne in the manner that we did, I must admit I was expecting us to get someone a little bit more tried and tested and on a permanent basis to partner JCH. Still a while yet to go in the transfer window though and I do feel like we are steadily building a basis of a good team but I wont be feeling confident going into the new season until another Winger and ideally an attacking midfielder is added as it is obvious the goal scoring burden needs to be removed from solely JCH and distributed elsewhere in the team, if we are to even contemplate having a successful season.

Feel we need another 'biggish' unit up front. If at anytime JCH is unavaible there us no one to lead the line.

How about we see them play in the quarters for 10/11 games ? On paper I'd saying getting Champ experienced players like Jaakkola and Little, sounds promising, what do you say ?

I’m obviously going to reserve judgment on players until I see them play and credit to the recruitment team, I think they’ve done a good job of rebuilding the defence after we lost J Clarke, Bonham and Lockyer. I just feel a bit disappointed that we’ve known for a long time that our midfield and attack isn’t the best that it could be, yet so far I see no meaningful change. Hopefully GC and TW are working on it.

Well axe I think Tyler Smith is a young striker on the up and that’s the kind of signing I think we should be doing. But as you say it’s only a loan and if he does well he’ll go back. When you see the squad as SSU has put it down, lacking creativity in midfield depending on the system we play. Done well so far but we need some more if we are looking at attacking the play offs. UTG!

Looking at the squad i am happy with our lot ,we look well stocked at the back, and up front i have more faith than some in our present options. I predict that Gavin Reilly will get 15 or so as will Smith, Tom will be much more prolific and notch 9 or 10 !hope JCH gets fit quickly but must have like for like replacement(Deon Moor?].Perhaps Moore is undecided on future if he see's players be signed on loan who will be ahead of him in pecking order? My one concern is creativity in midfield ,which was a big problem last season., any way i see options all over the place and i am very optimistic for the new season, think there will be one or two youngsters who will delight and surprise us,the future is bright for the blue and whites,up the Rovers!! Eh? Surely this is contradictory! I can see why you would think that, guess i am hoping the new signings and a reborn Kyle will provide more creativity than last season but of course it is not a given, ever the optimist me, Rovers fans have to be don't we?

Lucas Tomlinson is the one !very ,very skillful and can leave defenders dizzy, but he is still a lad physically and may get pushed around to easily at the mo,certainly worth a sub place though ,to bring on and create chances, once he beefs up reckon he will be some player!hope he gets chance as dont think we have shown enough faith in young players recently, dont want Russe to go on loan ,he is good enough for squad now,IMO! You may be right halifax and I know nothing about him but when you say he needs to strengthen physically you are probably right but we need to give these younger players a chance in the squad because until you give them a chance we will never know. I know it’s not the same but as a ST holder here at Bournemouth I saw Brooks here last season play about 16/17 games and you look at him and think he’s not strong enough and he probably isn’t but his skill level was such that he would create lots of chances and his speed meant some defenders couldn’t catch him. We thought he’d be stuck on the bench and come on at the end for experience but Eddie H played him from the start, took him off around 60 mins until he lasted longer and longer as the season went on. I expect he would have been in the gym this summer getting stronger but, as you say, if he’s good enough put him in the squad. I’d certainly like to see Russe and Kilgour in every match day squad. UTG! You be a man after me own heart Wareham, 100% agree, must be an age thing!

Lack of wingers, creative midfielders and proven goal scorers. Doesn’t bode well.
Clarke-Harris injury/operation is literally worst news of the summer could only be worse if we sold him.

Coughlan would probably like to move bennett and nichols on but thats no easy task when they are both well paid but have not been good in league 1. How can the club afford to bring in a reasonably proven striker or creative midfield player until he gets these 2 off the wage bill. Ps no need for wingers imo as GC does not seem keen on them.
I watched tomlinson v southend in the development game at the mem last season and for me he is the only outstanding prospect at the club. Hope he shows that ability in training and other games and if he does i hope GC gets him in the squad. Tomlinson appears to prefer playing on the right cutting in onto his left foot or as an attacking midfield player.

Well, we no longer have Lines, Lockyer, Smith, Slocombe or Payne on the wage bill. With Lines & Lockyer having been two of our highest earners, a (very) conservative estimate would be that we were shelling out around £10k+ a week for these five players. How CAN’T we afford to bring in a reasonably proven striker or creative midfielder?

I understand we all differ in our opinions of players but I for one would keep Nichols, I have heard many times groans when Nichols came on as a sub under DC, but to me he is a quality player he links up play and has lots of technical ability, I just think it is a confidence thing with him but I can see how patience has worn thin with a lot of the fans, but I’d still have him in my squad.

Likewise JCH replaced Payne as our No 9 last January.

We struggled last season and I've said it before - we have only as it stands strengthened IMO one position, RB. There is nothing at the moment to suggest we will do anything other than that again this season. Can't say that I'm over impressed with the signings so far - and there are still rumours of signing another CB - bizarre. I'm not kidding myself, because we have made half a dozen signing we are any better than we were last season. The one real positive is getting shot of Payne.

(Yes I do realise that, but there’s not a chance in hell the wages of the players we’ve brought in this summer are equal to the wages of the players we’ve lost).

After GC came in our record from those 25 games was 37 pts - mid table or higher form rather than struggling. W 9 D 10 L 6. Good players already in - Little, Jaakkola from the championship with good reports, Smith a young striker from The Prem - with a good scoring record; and good experience at L1 level with Davies and Leahy. Massive clubs like Sunderland and Ipswich have signed only 1 or 2 in comparison - check if you don't believe. GC will get a couple more attacking players in but has to bide his time like those clubs mentioned above and is probably keen to offload a few ( Bennett, Mensah) to also help make those signings happen. If you compare it to beginning of last season - we'd already lost Ellis and Gaffney and only replaced them with - the one and only Stefan Payne on the last day of the window !! A PANIC BUY if we ever saw one.

We dont know the balance in salary between outgoing and incoming players. The other issue ie how much has the playing budget been cut? 5,10,20,30% ? Nobody knows.

THD/Leahy is he better ?- even DC didn't want him!! - but probably forced into that signing because of circumstances. Davies replacement for Lockyer - very probably not better. Smith for Jakubiak - maybe better - time will tell. We're crying out for creativity in midfield, a wide player and big target player up front as a complement or back up to JCH. You have to admit the football under Coughlan was dire but understandable and the signing of JCH was possibly the only reason we managed to stay up - without him or adequate back up we could be in trouble. Gaffney and Ellis were hardly prolific and since moving on both have probably now found their level. I agree it would be good if we could offload Mensah & Bennett.
