He's admitted he made a mistake with Zamora, but he did rate him enough to give him minutes as a sub away at places like Burnley, at a time when we had the likes Roberts, Cureton and Ellington. He also offered Zamora a new contract, but the board wouldn't budge and give him better terms (the offer was about £650 a week if I remember correctly) and he had already shown he could score goals at Bath City and then Brighton, with Brighton already tapping him up with a much better contract offer, and with him out of contract at the end of the season and the other strikers I mentioned at the club, he thought his career progression was best served at Brighton and you can't really argue with the way that turned out for him on a personal level. I'm also not sure he was given the funds to replace Mauge, because if he had them I'm sure he would have spent them, rather than bringing in the youngsters Jordan Stewart and Rob Wolleaston. Being only 13 in that "nearly" season I remember the results and most of the players, but I'd completely forgotten about Wolleaston and Stewart. Didn't we play Andy Thomson in the centre a couple of times when Mauge was out? I also seem to remember we had Astafjevs, Hillier, and possibly a promising young Simon Bryant in the middle? My memory may be playing tricks on me though! Yes, Thomson played in the centre for a few games. Astafjevs and Hillier, but Bryant more the season after I think. It was that long ago and my memory isn't the best, so could be wrong!

Kind of surprised he never had Mickey Barrett as one of the best players but at least he mentions Zamora, he said he wouldn’t make it as a pro when I spoke with him, back then. Did a lot to get Bristol spoken of but, I feel, seen as a comic rather than a serious pro manager. I can’t help it but I still get agitated when I think of the 99/00 season and he never replaced Mauge but was given the funds to. Call me a moaner or whatever you like, I think he’s a good laugh but I think his time is up and he is better off being with his family and enjoying life. One thing you can say is he gave is all, whether that be playing or managing and that’s all any of us can do. Stay commentating Ollie and thanks for the memories. The centre was never the same once you, Kite and Curle stopped coming together. Still see him at the pet shop. I just give him space now. I agree with all of that except the comic not a pro manager bit. He won promotion to the Premier League with Blackpool who had the lowest budget in the division that season and then nearly kept them up the following season. He’s also won other promotions and has a decent CV I agree he is a comical character , and that’s because he’s got charisma and doesn’t do the usual cliche press interviews that the majority of managers in the game do. I think you can have character , be a bit of a laugh and be a successful player and then manager and I’m glad Olly has achieved that.

What a side we had that year, yet we still somehow managed to finish outside the playoffs!

Edit: I think one of Thomson's first games in midfield for us was the crazy 3-3 against Stoke at the Mem.

I agree that the failure to replace him contributed hugely to the collapse of that season, but my memory of it was that the problem was that he wasn't given the funds, which is probably why we signed Wolleaston and Stewart and Preston grabbed Neil Redfearn, who would have been perfect. Because Geoff Dunford talked about it several times, as did Ollie. It was Ollie who said he had enough in our youth set up to keep us competitive. Not a fan of GD ( rip) but he did make funds available

Could be either I guess. Still a terrible waste of probably the most exciting team I've seen in the quarters.

Don' see the obsession with Holloway, never go back.. Didn't he say he wanted QPR to beat us when we played in the cup?

James Clarke or Holloway? Neither but if JC came with Darrell Clarke then I'd pick them up myself
