Micky Mellon said: “He fits the old style aggressive target man role and we will need that in this division because it is very physical and competitive. “Stefan is the type of lad that will work his socks off at that end of the football pitch. He will make a good physical contribution alongside getting us that end of the pitch and keeping us there." Mwahahahaha Mellon has gone down in my estimation big time! (Although I thank him for taking Payne off our hands) Well Mr Mellons has certainly done his homework there ✅ You can’t fault him! Blimey Marshy I love your sense of humour. If SP works his socks off anywhere on a pitch then I’m Brad Pitt!😉 Sounds like Tranmere’s scouting network is worse than ours. Now, excuse me but Angelina's on the phone. UTG!

One of the oddest players I've ever known us to have bought. Scored a decent number the year before, came in and for the first month looked to be unplayable. Sadly after that month, he just looked like he'd never played before.
Bye bye Stefan Payne, you shall not be missed.

One of the best bits of business the club could have done this summer. Can’t remember a departure welcomed as much as this since Mark Wright. Now he’s signed for Tranmere, I’m looking forward to seeing and hearing the reaction when he comes to the Mem! Yes, it will be interesting, early August, 20th. Well he’ll still be in their good books and our memories will be fresh. Someone posted recently asking about the reception Ellis will get. I said I hope he will be cheered to the rafters considering what he did for us. I hope Ellis will be cheered for every touch. Payne will be different! And we all know why. (And if he scores and Sod’s law is that he will I am still pleased he’s nothing to do with us any longer.) UTG!
He does seem to have a big ego and getting stick from us might encourage him to actually put some effort in.
Easier said than done but not showing him any reaction will probably end up with him doing what he did most of his Rovers career....nothing.

I guess we had to fork out for that, then. It's a shame, in football, sometimes the worse you perform, the more leverage you get. He's played a blinder if he wanted to leave, probably picked up a signing on fee then a nice parting gift! He's got to be our most expensive flop of all time? I wonder where we stand with his pay off as far as SCMP/FFP is concerned is that counted in our playing budget or separately, although I guess the ALQ's are going to count it as part of GC's playing budget regardless!! Oh I dunno. I think Puffer Evans still holds that record.

For tranmere fans coming on here to see what we think of Payne: um, we don’t like him. This feels like revenge for the Leyland daf final in 1990

Not quite Andy Spring territory (for the middle aged amongst us) but that's great business by us.

Glad a bad egg like him is gone. Lets get someone in like Leon Clarke to replace him and I’ll be really pleased with Coughlan’s business

Delighted with this and whilst GC was ever the gentleman in the press I bet he let Payne know what he thought of him before departing.
First blockage cleared ... expecting more good news soon.

Ish Miller scored his only hat trick at the Mem He was unplayable that night. One of the best performances I've seen from an opposition player that night, and yet my standout memory of that game is still the blackthorn chanting Goodnight Irene at 5-1 down and my mate who was a neutral standing next to me couldn't believe that we were still so loud despite being hammered.
