You could argue he probably wouldn’t have featured loads this season if GC gets in the players he wants to but it just reinforces how short of options we are in that area.
Fingers crossed for a full and speedy recovery though and he comes back a stronger player.

Crap timing for him. Can see it being hard trying to force his way into contention for the side if he's out for the start of the season, a shame as there's real promise in him.

Fingers crossed for a full and speedy recovery though and he comes back a stronger player. If he wasn't deemed good enough, we might have been able to loan him out again. Freeing up wages, to bring in someone else. Now we won't be able to. Hopefully for him he makes a full recovery. Knee injuries are never easy to come back from.

I can see why we've kept Matthews. Young and technically very gifted, always makes things happen when he gets on the ball, can dribble at players and pick a good pass. Impressed me away against Barnet last season, just didn't get played enough by either DC or Coughlan.
A real shame that he's got such a bad injury at this stage of his career, needed to be playing regularly whether it be with us or out out on loan. Get well soon Sam.

Can we insure against this sort of thing? I’d imagine we could with the money involved these days

looks like we will be keeping Bennett then, GC was in two minds whether to keep him or let him go if an offer came in, but we might need him now, hopefully he will show the sort of form he did when he first arrived and did at Swindon.

Anybody know what the full story is behind him requiring an op, as it seems strange timing was he injured in pre-season, or just waited until the summer was over then had a knee op for a long term knee problem.
Not sure about the Bennett situation as doesn't this mean we are desperate for a decent winger not just having to hope that the Bennett we signed in Jan 2018 turns up this season, rather than the one we saw for most of last season.

There's definitely something to Matthews, it's just whether or not we can utilise him in a way that hides his short stature. We managed it a couple of times last season (Wycombe away and Barnet in the FA cup come to mind) and he looked a great talent, but we've also seen him bullied out of games. Hopefully he comes back better than ever.

Makes no difference at all this, both were told they could find new clubs and it’s not a question of keeping one of them. One was the highest paid player last season at the club with Lockyer and the other was sent on loan to non league side who started sub some weeks. Bennett will still go regardless of this.

From what I was told both Payne and Mensah wouldn't be playing again for Rovers and of course the Payne has now gone. GC was undecided over Bennett after he did well at Swindon and Mathews wanted to stay and fight for a place in the first team. Both are under contract so unless they agree to leave , they will be with us next season.

Great shame for the lad. Behind the professional organisation is a personal story which often gets forgotten and I wish him all the best in his recouperation. From the op it’s not clear what the problem is but good luck anyway. UTG!

Kevin Maher gave us a brief update about him in the Doncaster pre match presser funnily enough. Apparently he underwent surgery in the summer so the club aren’t looking to rush him back into playing just yet.
Remember this time last year when we were doing dreadful under DC but Matthews seemed to be the one glimmer of hope? Just hope we get to see a bit more of him when he returns as I still think there’s a good player there.

Only position he could possibly play IMO with the 5-3-2 is in the number 10 role.
