Lee Brown, very competent pen taker. Defender. Remember him missing one at Torquay for us.

Best penalty taker I can remember was a defender, Graham Alexander. And the best I can remember was Matt Le Tissier. What about Ruud van Nistelrooy as well, he always took cracking pens from what I can remember. As for defenders taking pens, David Unsworth was a reliable penalty taker.

Steve Bruce was a good penalty taker. He once scored 11 in a season and got 19 goals in total that season from centre back. Denis Irwin also took a good penalty.

Ray Stewart West Ham and Lambo were good but Matt le tis probably best followed by Graham Alexander

Who was the last player we had that you felt confident that a chance might be created when taking a corner?
Stewie Campbell I think
I remember him working the short corner routine with Sammy Igoe. Also, Lee Archer. Saw him score direct from a corner @ Twerton.

Walsall fan in peace. Like someone commented above you probably don't give a stuff on my opinion...but I'll give it anyway. Luke Leahy is possibly the worst left back I have ever seen at Walsall in 30+ years that has played so many games. His positional sense is atrocious - he just doesn't understand where he should be on the pitch when facing an opponent or if they have possession. I can understand why he may impress from certain stats and in a trial, as technically he can strike a ball well. The crosses stat is misleading though - most go out of play or aren't anywhere near the forwards. I've never seen a player put so many free kicks straight into touch. Thats how poor our manager was that didn't recognise this and take him off duty. He did it 2 or 3 times at your place last year. Yes he was part of a poor team, that was very badly organised defensively so any organisation will help, but he was still personally and directly responsible for so many goals from unforced errors and that will still happen in a decent defence. Worse still he would then visibly blame and berate others for his mistakes and caused terrible disharmony in the squad. A egotistical bad apple based on nothing but his own opinion of himself. Having said all that, he is clearly suited to one position - wing back. If you play that and he can be taught how to cross then you may get lucky. Otherwise, good luck! I'm just glad he's gone, whatever level we are playing at. PS. He scored one penalty against his old club, but missed others by hitting them ALL weakly to the keeper's right. Look out for that if he takes one for you. Funny we said that about the 2 players and a manager we let you have recently, be prepared for some boring football and to struggle to score goals Blimey! I take it you are joking Henbury. I’m not at all glad that DC or SS have gone, nor JC for that matter. They’ve gone let’s leave it at that, no need to try and compete with a Walsall fan who’s obviously still bitter about relegation. Those now at Walsall should do well in L2, I hope they do, GC has shown a very focused approach to recruitment giving me more confidence, imo, than ive had in the past few summer windows. UTG!

Don't worry we have seen the likes of Che Wilson, Paul Hardyman and Matthew Lockwood at LB so this lad sounds like an upgrade

GGMI, would you ask your Girlfriends previous boyfriend if she was a nice girl.... ? Same applies Not at all. That is one person's bias opinion. When a whole fanbase is saying they don't rate him then that is a different story. Learned my lesson on that one with Paul Buckle.Hang on GGMI, 2 people on here plus a few on their forum hardly qualifies as a whole fanbase! The 2 on here have come on to stir things up I understand that, and they’ve succeeded. But let’s give him a chance. I watched him at the Mem as pirate had said he was worth a shout and he played ok and crossed for their late goal. Nothing special but he was up and down that wing causing problems. Ill give him time to impress and in GC we have a good manager to improve his defending. UTG!

An interview with the Walsall reporter who has seen every game for the last few years. Provides a very detailed background of our new left back. Perhaps someone more computer savvy can post the link.

Thanks bideford, I’ll have a look. UTG!
edit: Apart from nearly having a nervous breakdown trying to manoeuvre around that website it was an interesting read. In other words a fairly objective reporter for the Star and Express who doesn’t have an axe to grind feels he is a skilful, attacking player who has a very good left foot and was a good player for Walsall despite them being a poor team over the past two years but who was scapegoated by a section of the fans. I’ll take that and hope GC can make him a better defensive player.
Thanks for pointing it out bideford.

He sounds just perfect for what we want on the left side

That’s all sounding fairly positive. I trust GC to improve the defensive side of his game. Sounds like he’ll be a big threat down the left for us in an attacking sense.
