...No. We have endured enough turmoil the last couple of years. This bloke would add to that. We are a family club. Do one you saddo. UTG. Have we ? I think we’ve had a pretty bloody good last 5 years . Back to back promotions followed by 3 mid table finishes in league 1 and two very honest hard working managers who are clearly nice guys. We’ve had a couple of players come in not make enough of an effort but most of our signings have been genuine hard working at least I think we’ve had it pretty good these last few years.

If we take the rumours of Bennett being on 4.5k a week as truth (And lets face it, these rumours end up being far from accurate) then Ched Evans on 5k seems like a steal. Were the bennett salary rumours solid reliable information from inside football? Or some k**b on a forum making them up?

He did make a public apology for his actions FYI. His apology was pretty limp. But as many say, everyone deserves second chances. But on the face of what I've seen regarding the trial and subsequent actions I wouldn't sign him. But I don't have to do my due diligence like coggy. If cogs determines different. I'm not boycotting. His behaviour was really poor no doubt. But we're kidding ourselves if we think footballers are angels and are worthy of role model status off the pitch.

Fair enough. At least you are consistent, it was a while ago and I can't remember any controversy at that time. Perhaps we should have a Morality Manager to work alongside Widdrington on recruitment. Shame the club Chaplain left as he could have helped sort out a set of guidelines or standards that need to be met !!! It’s very simple to put the poll into a black and white, yes or no reaction when in truth the whole issue opens up loads of different shades of grey opinions about Ched Evans. You are right to a degree because I suspect in all players’ contracts there will be clauses about “misconduct” and “gross misconduct” and circumstances where actions bring the club into disrepute which will cover the morality stuff you’re indicating. So I know you’re making a joke but that stuff will be there and I bet Sheff U acted on it with what Evans did irrespective of whether he was innocent or guilty legally. i wouldn’t want him here for the divisiveness it would cause the club, too much bad stuff would all be circulating around. He was innocent, legally, but has been tried and found guilty by many of the British public in his attitudes towards other people and his actions at that time on that night. His partner /wife forgave him so that’s enough for me but his actions have repercussions and one of those is that many fans wouldn’t want him at their club. UTG!

I facepalm when I hear stuff lamenting how bad we've had it recently. We're back to being an average L1 club for crying out loud, what are people expecting!?! We were only in the fifth tier as recently as less than 5 years ago and now some people are declaring it a failure if we don't challenge in L1. I'd say they need to get a grip and realise that they've actually had it good these last few seasons, in face a damn sight better than the preceding 20-25 years.

I've gone with no, but that's based on wages. If it is correct that he is on £5k a week, that's an annual salary of £250k plus. Too much for a club losing the money we are losing in my opinion. The London office or Ched Evans- which would bring more value to the club? Hmm...

Why should it split the fanbase? Can we all not just support whoever plays for our team and give them a chance? There are doubtless some readers of Mumsnet amongst the fan base who can’t accept the man was found not guilty and, whilst morally being a bit of a rascal, is still free to ply his trade.

Don’t think their victims had much of a chance. UTG! Totally different scenario though, people’s lives were lost and families torn apart thanks to them. In fact I can’t even believe there is still a debate about Evans given how McCormack was able to resume his career given the lasting effects of his actions.

What makes you think we still have a "London" office, just asking if we have a picture of it or something As we know it exists/existed I’m assuming it’s still here until I hear otherwise. Happy to be proven wrong though.

They are always different scenarios, depending on the opinion you take, but they all have victims. I suspect families can be torn apart in lots of different ways, as I said it’s not black and white they are several shades of grey. But they all carry repercussions which the perpetrator has to face. UTG!

UTG! Totally but the other key difference is that Evans was cleared so can he be considered a perpetrator? The core tenet of British justice is innocent until proven guilty but that seems to go out the window when it comes to sexual assault, just look at Paddy Jackson. Those swivel eyed loons on twitter and mumsnet won’t let him play rugby again in this country despite him not being found guilty of a crime. When does enough become enough? Or maybe it’s to do with who you are? Let’s not forget that Ronaldo is currently battling a sexual assault allegation, would Rovers fans who don’t want Evans because of his behaviour also turn down Ronaldo for the same reasons? Do they tell their kids not to idolise Ronaldo because he might have been up to no good with a woman?

Gas 365, don’t disagree with most of what you’ve said. Fair enough you think it’s the legal stuff which should be the priority and if you’re innocent that’s all that matters. In legal terms you are correct, if you’re innocent then you should face no punishment. Others would say, as I said previously, that he’s guilty of acting in a way that many people would find unacceptable. That doesn’t and didn’t make it illegal but it will still provoke a reaction and make sure the “perpetrator” has to face up to people’s opinions and face the public distaste of how he acted. For most young people, or any people, in this position they are not in the public awareness to the extent that a footballer is so consequently footballers or any sportsmen face a much more public trial than others might. Probably not right but it is what it is and I guess famous footballers or sportsmen in the public eye have a greater responsibility to behave and are more vulnerable to bad publicity when they don’t. And in the end everyone owns their own behaviour and have to accept the repercussions that arise from it. UTG!

And in the end everyone owns their own behaviour and have to accept the repercussions that arise from it. UTG! Don’t get me wrong- I don’t agree with his actual conduct and it’s not the way I would choose to behave, but how someone chooses to live their life is their choice as long as they are acting within the boundaries of the law. Scumbags abound in football. Hell, in society itself. In a squad of 24 - 30 footballers are they all going to be nice lads that your daughter could bring home for tea? Bound to be at least one who likes to ‘pump and dump’ girls who could be your daughter- we just don’t get to hear about it. So I do struggle with the argument that footballers are role models and we should look to sign only players that are. As a previous poster said there would be precious few about if you were looking for squeaky clean characters. Look at the likes of Frank Lampard, he has built up a great image over the years yet he was part of the spit-roasting scandal many years ago. Ryan Giggs seemed very wholesome until he was caught shagging his brothers wife. The list is endless of low class behaviour from footballers, we don’t have to like it or approve but should we actively seek to avoid signing those who have indulged in it? We would be cutting off our nose to spite our face if we do and I suspect people’s objections are only based on the quality of player. Would anyone have objected to us signing Giggs if he had left Man U on a free despite what a morally bankrupt individual he is? Ched Evans is a lower league striker so a bit easier to write off in that sense, I suspect.
