disagree, with Tom Nich and JCH doing a smash and grab this next season i see us doing very well Blimey, if we are relying on Nichols getting goals we could be in trouble. Would love to see him come good, but how many more chances can the bloke get. I have hope he will, because i fear we are not going to get any better

For me, full back is one of the most important positions in modern football and you see teams at the highest level rely on width from these positions rather than use the traditional wingers.
If you look at the Premiership it’s not easy to name many traditional wingers but full backs like Andy Robertson, Trent Alexander Arnold, Matt Doherty, Kyle Walker are all absolutely key players for their teams.
Look at Luton last season – their two full backs were absolutely exceptional and a large reason as to why they won the league.
I'm delighted we've really looked to improve this area.

Ah, that old 'guarantees goals' thing. How do you guarantee goals?
The usual answer is, they have a consistent goalscoring record, and one reasonable definition of this is that they have a record of consistently scoring 15 league goals or more in a League 1 season. Out of last season's top goalscorers in League 1, before last season:
James Collins has this record. Lyle Taylor had only once before scored 15 or more league goals in a season. John Marquis had only done it once before and his one goalscoring season was in League 2. Tom Eaves had only done it once before. Ian Henderson had done it twice before, so might have fitted the criteria, although only scored 13 league goals in 16/17. Freddie Ladapo had never done it before, in fact had a pretty rubbish goalscoring record. Ched Evans, the answer to all out prayers apparently. But before last season, he'd only had one previous season in which he scored more than 10 goals, and that was 7 years ago. In 16/17, he scored 5 goals in 25 league games. Keiffer Moore - only one previous season ion which he scored 15 or more league goals, and that included a run of 4 goals in 20 games in the Championship. Ivan Toney - had never previously scored 15 goals in a season. Cauley Woodrow - had never previously scored 15 goals in a season. Jonson Clarke-Harris - had never previously scored 15 goals in a season.
So, out of last season's top goalscorers, there was only one, maybe two players who you could say 'guaranteed' goals.
What I'm saying is, signing a goalscorer is not as easy as some seem to make out. Without using the power of hindsight, they aren't that easy to predict.
I really get the sentiment. Nothing is guaranteed and I think I've made it before. However, I think its fair to say that many of those names had been muted before. With maybe the only exception being JCH. So people can predict these things. It's about getting the best of what we have. We're not as desperate for this or that as many are suggesting. We appear to have a super striker. Some adequate support. I believe theres goals and assists in: Bennett, Clarke, Sercombe and rodders. We look stronger at fullback. If the Gks and CBs prove to be good- we"ll be alright. Well. I heard them. I think we all did.

Haven't they both been sold this summer for £m's? They hardly sold like two FB's picked up on free transfers? I'm not sure we've ever had a successful season without a creative CM? Regardless we've lost Lines, Locks and Payne off the wage bill but apparently being priced out of replacing them!

I'm not saying we don't need a creative midfielder but i'm not sure we need traditional wingers.

I'd love those that say that you can predict goalscorers to mention say, 8 players at the start of the season that they say will guarantee goals.
Some more fun- let's look at the 2017/18 League 1 top goalscorers and see how they did in 2018/19:
Jack Marriott: 9 goals in the Championship Brett Pitman: 11 goals in League 1 Will Grigg: 4 goals in the Championship, 4 goals in League 1 Bradley Dack: Success! 15 goals in the Championship Tom Eaves: Success! 21 goals in League 1 Charlie Wyke: 4 goals in League 1 Nick Powell: 8 goals in the Championship Erhun Oztumer: 0 goals in the Championship
So only 2 of the top 8 goalscorers from League 1 had a successful 18/19 season, a 25% success rate. Probably not much better than signing any League 1 striker at random.
Perhaps we should be signing a top goalscorer from League 2 to guarantee goals? 2017/18 League 2 top goalscorers:
Billy Kee: 13 goals in League 1 Mo Eisa: 0 goals (from 22 minutes play!) in the Championship Marc McNulty: 1 goal in the Championship, 7 goals in the Scottish Premiership Danny Hylton: 8 goals in League 1 Christian Doige: 1 goal in the Championship, 14 goals in League 2 James Collins: Success! 25 goals in League 1 Jayden Stockley Success! 16 goals in League 2, 3 in the Championship Kristian Dennis: 4 goals in League 2!
Again, 2 out of 8 were successful the next season, with a couple of middlers.
Who'd be a manager?

Could it be that GC doesn't have a need for creative midfield players, as the ball will often bypass them anyway? Cynical perhaps, but aside from the obvious personality clash between GC and CL, there doesn't seem to be any hint of this sort of player being brought in. Maybe he doesn't want that type of player?
That's why he signed JCH as he could create goals himself and score from 30 yards.
Seriously though we need 'an Oztumer' to create things rather than rely on JCH to carry us. We always play so much better when the ball is kept on the ground
Spot on. The better sides do keep the ball on the deck. We have a fabulous pitch...let's use it.

My big worry is that if JCH remains with us this season, he'll be much more focussed on by opposing managers and their defenders. Expect incoming pelters on him if he's just about to receive a 50/50 pass in the centre circle or out wide. I'm sure that last seasons achievements will not now go unnoticed when oppositions are planning their upcoming game against us. I fear for the guy. And if he does get a major calling card, Plan B doesn't look half as hopeful.

The ironic thing is that our home record had been decent for years with a poor pitch, and the season we sort it out we nearly get relegated. I said at the time we just evened the pitch up for the opposition.
