Friendlies might not mean much but I'm going to take beating one of the favourites to get promoted from league two at their place as a positive sign.
If I was getting carried away I'd point out that we only drew away there in the league last season and this time last season we were being battered by Exeter.

Happy with a win mostly due to the fact it will mean a more positive week going into Blackpool for team spirit and hopefully more positive on here.

I haven't seen or listened to the game so can't specifically comment on today however it's obvious we don't create lots of chances which in part explains the poor scoring records of all the forwards we have bar JCH. The difference is that he has the capability to produce a goal from nothing which the others don't seem to posses. I'd love to see us bring in a player that can open up defences with a clever pass whilst chipping in with goals himself but realistically I'm not sure where we get one of those we can afford. As I see it our strength is going to be based on being hard to break down with our threat coming from more adventurous full backs than last season. Hopefully GC can find a winger & creative midfielder from somewhere before the deadline but if he doesn't imo we're not as badly off as some might think

Listening to the commentary Upson had a good game as did little, Bennett and Sercs. A good work out for how we will play at Blackpool i would assume. Wonder if The new lad would be better up front than Nichols in this formation.

I'm not at the game today and haven't posted on this thread until now, however I share the concerns about a lack of creativity. I've watched Rovers for 42 years but that doesn't make me any more or less qualified to judge than those you are dismissing as only watching since DC was here. I do take your point about the midfielders you mention, but the big difference is that the strikers you refer to were either capable of creating chances for themselves or had a particular attribute (finishing, pace, strength, etc) that quite frankly, none of our current ones do. Creativity is a problem. It has been since GC fell out with Lines or Lines stopped being the player he was, depending upon your point of view. If GC doesn't address it, whilst stockpiling strikers and defenders, he will only have himself to blame. While I do agree that we ideally would add a creative player into the team there is no way Chris lines is at his best anymore. The rumoured off field issues and that falling out with GC aside, he hardly featured for either manager last season and when he did we did not get the Chris lines we once seen dominating the middle and creating chances. I do disagree slightly with your point about none of our current forwards having strong attributes as imo JCH has every attribute you listed above and he did seem to score plenty of goals in the half a season he played here without the so called creative players we are crying out for. I think we have added creativity in the full back areas and think we will get assists from these areas. Me like every other rovers fan wants to see us be successful and at this moment we will all just have to wait and see how this season unfolds once the real action starts Fair comment. Let's hope the others can chip in to support JCH and as you say, we all get what we wish for! UTG

2 goals in 75 appearances according to wikipedia this could be his breakout season for rovers though fingers crossed Someone says that every season

Due to off field issues he hardly played, plus w/o JCH we didn't have a striker who could score anyway. Perhaps Sercs can take Lines role and Bennett can keep up his pre-season form to give us some creativity. Sercs can't play the Lines role IMO. Completely different type of players. The challenge with Sercs is to get him ghosting in and scoring again, not converting him to something he isn't. Completely agree with this. I mentioned something similar on another thread that sercombe is not a creative ball player, neither is he a defensive deep lying player. I believe that one of GC biggest tasks is to get the sercombe we all seen and loved when he first signed back on that pitch. Getting in and around the box and scoring goals is what he does best and I really hope GC can fit this into the team as when sercombe plays his game he is a massive asset

All you people missing Lines, I just read this on Northampton forum after a 1 - 0 loss to Brackley Town on Tuesday night:
'Thought that Lines was particularly disappointing and we lacked any dominant performance in midfield'

A close friend of mine at the game tells me Bennett was the best player on the pitch, by a mile.
I’ve been highly critical of the lad, especially the first half of last season but if he can pull those socks up (literally) and become the creative string pulling midfield dynamo we require, I’m confident of a good season.

Sorry but friendlies mean nothing, not not much. Our last "successful" pre season was probably under Buckle and look how that ended. Dont think we ever had a good un under DC and he got us two promotions and many memories.

Unsure but do you lot think Moore will get loaned out and Reilly potentially sold? Coughlan seems like he prefers Nichols

Can’t see someone taking him on. Probably in January though. But agreed, Reilly looks the most obvious of the strikers to leave now we’ve signed the Barnsley chap.
