Great team photo, remember the 1989 / 1990 season fondly as will all Gasheads. My favourite 1 on 1 player in front of goal against any goalkeeper Gary Penrice, Geoff 20man looking more like “Yosser Hughes” and Kenny Hibbitt, shame the leg injury at Twerton brought his Gas career to end. Utg

The 1989/90 season kicked off on 19th August 1989, but that’s not where our story begins...
How exactly did THAT season transpire? For a blow by blow account follow Keith Brookman's monthly series all this season, starting today with 'The Awakening'. FIND IT HERE That is a great little read and really made me want to read it all, were it available. Well done

A retro forum from 30 years ago would be good. Prior to the opener vs Brentford, hot topics are: - Lack of ambition from the board to support Gerry with marquee signings - Where will the goals come from if our star striker is inevitably sold - Will the football be defensive and predictable? - Any update on a new stadium please Dennis?

That season I gave up playing football to concentrate on my running. What a season to do that as I saw so many great games except the City game as couldn’t get a ticket. As I didn’t live near Bristol, I had to rely on teletext that night.

For the 1995 playoff final I got it just several hours later, on BBC World Service, but what a gutting few seconds it was!

Quite amazing looking at that picture that we lost both Penrice and Martyn, I remember the feeling around the place was that the party was over.... It soon became aparant that it had only just begun

I was a 'young' fan and away a lot that season and TBH in those days you didn't get to know every detail, so I never really had the full anxiety of them leaving, but I can say one thing... The replacements were amazing and getting Brian Parkin for basically free was an utter steal. Legend.

The third instalment is now out.
How exactly did THAT season transpire? For a blow by blow account follow Keith Brookman 's monthly series all this season on the BRFPA website, continuing today with September 1989, which I've entitled 'Let the Fight(s) Begin' because we had Notts County that month, plus several 'big' Northern teams AND a trip to the Gate. Worth it alone just for this photo of a young Ian Hazel & Peter Cawley, both of whom came to our 2018 Dinner and were great lads

As we don't have a game on Sat 2 May (TV dictates that we are away v Gills on Sunday), are there any plans for a celebration event at the Mem.
Maybe the 90s heroes could be invited to watch the 2/5/90 City match or Gerry and the Dreammakers DVDs in the bars along with the fans? Or a meal etc
Re-match for charity?
(Just putting my tin hat on after my Bury idea debacle!)

(Just putting my tin hat on after my Bury idea debacle!) Sadly John Kayes advertised and starting selling tickets in June for a 1990 Night at the Mem on 1st May 2020, so it seems very unlikely we will do what we had hoped to do. Our 4th Annual Dinner on 26th March will have a focus on the 1989/90 squad and most probably include a Q&A with several of them, but we realise that that isn't the down-to-earth event that we would have hoped to follow through on. BRFPA 4th Annual Former Players DinnerWe are always looking at running events, including cheap down to earth ones, so we'll have to wait and see, but already got three events lined up for the season.

Even though it is etched in my mind and heart, I cannot seem to come to terms with that season being 30 years ago ... feel very old now!

Fantastic I was working on a Computer project that season and we had to work Saturdays listening to Dave Lee Travis doing his 'wonk, wonk oops' on the radio snooker

The seventh instalment is now out. January 1990 Read it HEREHow exactly did THAT season transpire? For a blow by blow account follow Keith Brookman's monthly series all this season on the BRFPA website, continuing today with the dawning of a new decade; January 1990, when Rovers struggled to spend money (you don't hear that phrase often!) & only picked up two points. Did they panic?! No, stay calm & think of Geoff Twentyman, Ollie, Yatesy, Jocky and the gaps...
