It was only a week ago or so that DC said we would definitely strengthen the squad before the Telford game but ............
The Boss noted that he is still keen to strengthen the squad, but it is proving difficult to do so.
“I’m looking to strengthen with the right player at the right time, and I’ve still got money left to try and attain such a player. I’m being patient with a couple of potentials, so we’ll see where it goes.”
Clarke also commented on Angelo Balanta, who is yet to play a first-team game for Rovers.
“He’s not back in full training yet. He’s stepped up his rehab work and might be back with us at the start of next week, but he definitely won’t be in contention for the game on Saturday.”
This isn't a personal dig at Darrell Clarke but why say things and then not deliver. Meanwhile the crowds are massive by Conference standards (7,000 for FGR) but none of this revenue is being used to strengthen the squad (??), especially a forward line that is failing miserably. By the end of January we will have played 30 of our 46 games in the league - will we have strengthened by then ? are we seriously trying to get top spot !?
Everything seems so flat and uninspiring. I'm tired of reading how strong the opposition are AGAIN , even the one bottom of the table who we are playing on Saturday.

some good points there mark, but a few reservations.... do you really expect clarke to come out and say 'we should pi55 on the opposition on Saturday because they're crap'(or something else along those lines) ? and although I respect your opinion, I wouldn't call us flat and uninspiring.... for sure there is a lot that can still be done to improve, but if the right player isn't available then budget has no bearing....

My uneducated guess is that all our money this season is tied up doing legal sh1t for the UWE. We've barely lost any crowd numbers, are still getting league funding and yet I can't think of a player we've signed who hasn't been free. Last year we were able to buy The Toole who was obviously ludicrously expensive because he was listed as undisclosed. Just a hunch.

sorry should have written that by Jan 4th we will already have played 30 league games so those hoping for new faces in January can see we will only have 16 games left to try and improve our position - that's not many games !?

I don't see much point bringing in someone for the sake of it.
DC is trying to stengthen with the right player. Waiting for a loan player, someone who for whatever reason hasn't feaured at their parent club may tide us over until Jan makes good sense.
We may yet end up surprised.

I hate football. You are not strictly correct. In fact this season we lost just over £500k in league funding. We also lost the £300k approx from the rugby.
Next season, if, god forbid, we don't get promotion, we lose the rest of our league funding which is another £260k. Therefore every season from then on we will be down just over £1 million on where we were last season.
It doesn't sound much when you say it quick, but the bottom line is we will probably die within 5 to 10 years unless we get the UWE. That is why the new stadium is so vital.

All the more reason to buy a striker than can score and go straight back up.

In that case he needs to stop saying things like "oh yeah I'll get one in before Telford". What kind of Rovers manager doesn't know how to lower our expectations?

We don't need another Bond.

We will have to be patient, DC will make a few silly statements and mistakes but its about not making the same mistakes twice. So far he is doing alright at that.

But why would we die within 5 to 10 years when other Conference clubs survive on gates a fraction of ours ? And even if we discount the Football League income our income is still much greater than many clubs in League 1 and League 2 who still manage to survive. Why are Rovers different to other League and Conference clubs ?

We don't need another Bond. Then we're not going up this season. Simple as that. If we can be 6th in this league while hardly scoring it is beggars belief to me how the club can't see that it's the only missing piece of the puzzle. I know Clarke has a thing about not wanting to cave under pressure and sign duffers, fine, good policy. So why sign Ángelo Balanta , an ex-prem player who probably commands a fair wage but hasn't played regular football for near on two years? Doesn't fit the philosophy to me. I still trust Clarke but it's frustrating to see that the club still dragging it's heels fixing the thing that was so obviously wrong last year and that sent us out of the league in the first place.

to be honest we actually have staff who aren't overpaid, and have a good work ethic.... we don't have any overpaid, over-rated players, and i'm enjoying it along with many other thousands of people....
if Clarke bought in one crap overpaid player in then everything that a 1000+ people are currently travelling to watch could be lost. I know it's a fine balance but crap overpaid players makes people stop watching football....
give the man time....

We have to applaud him for waiting for the right man, just hope it's not too long. In meantime I'm sure we are all hoping current line up finds its streak which does look a bit more likely. If they don't I'm not convinced 1 goal scorer will be transformative anyway, it's a team game remember
Balanta is a worry though, hope he's not expensive. And what was the mccrory connection btw?

Why are Rovers different to other League and Conference clubs ? Yeah, why should Bristol Rovers die, with 6000 regular fans, when dozens of clubs survive on less? The club has been here since 1883. I realise the finances for smaller clubs are very difficult, yet there they all are, club after club, still going, even if reborn, the same old names from my childhood and long before.

It may not be this season, but surely next year if not, because we have to do it with this squad as the basis and this manager. It cannot drag on to be another, different "project".

The reason I suggest we would die in 5 to 10 years is that you cannot believe we will still be getting 5500 at home and 800 away in 5 years time if we do not go back up.
This season the fans have maintained their loyalty. Don't expect it to last. Look at Grimsby. Down to just about 3000.
So I would suggest after this season there will be a decline in attendances, we then cut the budget even more to avoid losses, and in 5 to 10 years we will be on a par with the Braintrees and Altrinchams of this world.
You tell me how long we would survive that?
