This season looks like it is going to be a real roller coaster of a ride for our club as we have already seen the ups an d the downs with us one week looking a disjointed band of players and the next a half decent team that probably will linger around the midtable to bottom half but could even surprise a few people with the odd flirts with the top ten. Yesterdays performance really makes you wonder if despite the three previous losses away from the Mem it is going to be away from home where we are going to see the better performances as our set up under GC is far more suitable to a tough away game than an easy home game. It also showed that there is a very fine line between winning and losing in this division. Lincoln are renowned for their aerial play and this was definitely the sort of game we would have been brushed aside last season but with three centre halves we can now compete aerially with the best. All three centre halves have a mistake in them but who doesn't at this level? Certainly the more they play together the better they will get but my worry is that playing three centre halves does mean that we can't really afford any of them to get injured.
Jaakkola 7.5 I'm very much warming to this keeper as he seeks to establish himself as our No 1. Made some good saves and was dominant in his six yard box and did well with the expected aerial onslaught of crosses and long throws. Should be interesting Tuesday when he will have the familiar face of Jack Bonham at the opposite end. I have the feeling we may yet have the better keeper of the two.
Davies 7 Strong as ever although the odd lapse here and there but as a unit they were pretty impressive when you consider the style of the opposition.
Craig 8 Great display at the heart of the defence
Kilgour 7 Impressive performance and does not look out of place at all. If he can cut out the odd lapse in concentration we will have a very good player on our hands.
Little 7.5 Tired as expected but gave a good first half display and could be a key man if we can keep him fit as he will improve the more games he plays.
Clarke 7 That was more like it Ollie and can only hope that yesterdays performance can be the bench mark rather than the best we will see.
Upson 8.5 mom We certainly missed Ed last week as he is the one midfielder who has the skill and composure to dominate a match and make things happen and always makes himself available even in tight situations. This for me has been the ED Upson we thought we had signed and he is definitely the best we have at the moment.I do feel that this midfield three is only really suitable for away games and that for home games we should either have Ogogo or Ollied Cl,arke
Ogogo 6.5 Battled away as he does , winning more than his share of the ball and doing all the nasty boring work which doesn't always get a fair assessment compared to players with more creative ability.
Leahy 6 IMO not the answer but probably the best we have at the present time. I have been a bit disappointed with his non willingness to actually move the ball forward and gives the ball away too often.
Nichols 6.5 Won the penalty and unlucky with a first half header but whilst it may have been a harsh penalty I always have said of Nichols that he won't make things happen because he doesn't get into goalscoring positions but this proved the point as by moving into a dangerous position he made the referee have to make a decision and won us the match.
Clarke-Harris 7.5 Put himself about as he does and wanted the penalty as all good strikers should do. Looked confident and put the pressure penalty away with ease. and throughout led the attack with the confidence that he is one of the best around in this division.
Subs: Smith 7 Unlucky not to score after an impressive cut in and deflected shot.
Hare 6.5 Unlucky to be left out at the start and came on and did a good job to keep dangerous opponents at bay.
Crowd 7 Nosiest ground I have been at this season- very impressed and perhaps we could learn from this for our home games. The drum was irritating but that apart it was a good atmosphere and a great result for the near 500 who made the journey.
Ref 6 Some poor decisions but for both sides and in a way he did well because the home support put pressure on him all through the game.
Lincoln 6 To be fair they are a side similar to us when we first came up but with probably a bigger reputation for playing a certain way and are very good at it.The fact we held our own is celeb ration enough and whilst it was a close game I felt we just deserved to win and in a way after last weeks game 4 points out of six would have been looked at as a very good return if the results had been the other way around but it was probably all the better to be that way around and to get our first away win under our belts.
GC Got it right. What more can be said.
So we move on to Tuesday night and another awkward opponent under the Management of Steve Evans with the return of Jacubiak and Bonham. The big question is how do we line up? Personally I would go for Sercombe in place of Ollie Clarke to make us more of an attacking threat. UTG
