Stupid mistake.
He has had to rebuild that club after the complete mismanagement of the previous owners and managers and only just missed out on automatic last year. This year they have had another solid start. 6th after 11 games, nothing to say they would go up automatically this year. There are no gimmes in this league with some big clubs in it so that record should be good enough.
They will go for someone like Phil Parkinson now I expect.
Barnsley have also sacked their boss who took them up last year.

I'd imagine they were poor last Saturday if they lost to Lincoln who've been struggling since the Cowley brothers left. Appointing a manager with no EFL experience always seemed an odd one.

I think the fans and owners demand Championship or Premier League football from Sunderland, and they demand it now. It's a mindset that is hard to shake off, regardless of how badly run a club is or how poor their players are or how reduced the budget is.
We had a bit of the same attitude in the Conference, I think, at the start of that season. Defeats were unacceptable.
Remember when Leeds were a huge club, not so long ago? Nobody thought they'd stay long down in the Championship, but squillions of managers later, I think it's accepted now.

Lincoln have a new manager and that always brings about a bounce at a club. Their losing streak also had to end at some point and Lincoln have a good squad of players. If you look at his record in Scotland, he took over clubs in danger of being relegated to the top of their respective leagues getting St Mirren promoted to the SPL. In his time at Sunderland he lost just 10 games with a win ratio of 50%. The team sit 6th in the league having played a game less than the 2nd place side with a run rate which will see them in the top 6 and evidence of a manager that knows how to get there. In 18 months he has stopped the rot, stabilised the club and pushed them back towards looking up a division not down, which is exactly where Sunderland we’re heading. That’s why it’s stupid.

I agree to a point but the difference with us was we were playing rank amateurs some weeks who were part time clubs. L1 is a competitive league, more than it has ever been as the championship is becoming a monster. There are some decent players even playing for the likes of Lincoln and Accrington so the assumption you will walk it is misplaced. Who would think Wycombe would be 2nd this year? Who thought Fleetwood would sit 3rd? Sitting 6th after 11 games is not underachieving especially when you have held Ipswich away to a draw and the only defeats have come to a very good P’boro side and a club on a new manager bounce.

When you see clubs like wigan, blackburn, barnsley and rotherham unable to buy a win in the championship but cruising to promotion in league one after relegation its no wonder ross got fired imo.

Of course you can call it a “stupid mistake” which it is. If we waited until the season was over before commenting on football issues it would be a very boring forum. Now that would be stupid! I bet Michael Appleton has made a big difference to Lincoln who have some very good players who for a few weeks were shaken by the Cowleys departure. As to appointing a manager without EFL experience, blimey I bet Chelsea regret appointing Mourinho the first time when he had no EFL experience or Sir Alex when he came from Aberdeen with no EFL experience! There will be others who’ve had no experience, and his record is very good with very few defeats, although too many draws. Imo, Sunderland and their fans have the arrogant sense of entitlement of a big club who think it should be easy to get promotion and when they don’t blame the manager. Ross seems to have been unlucky to be in the mix yet gets sacked. Mind you, read their forum and you realise what a bunch they are. DC gets off easily compared to the dogs abuse Ross was getting. UTG!

Ross was coaching them well and was top 6. If he was in Kenny Jackets shoes at Pompey I could well understand it.

I see on Twitter that Charlie Adam has said that’s exactly who they should appoint Stendel has to be the obvious replacement for me. Just got promoted with Barnsley so knows the league and what it takes, just been sacked so no compo.

I think Ross did a better job than many people gave him credit for last season. Took Sunderland immediately to a playoff final that they were unlucky to lose in after the club had been a complete basket case the previous couple of seasons. I would have expected them to a bit better this season but they really weren't that far from the automatic places and I'm sure they would have gone on an unbeaten run sooner rather than later with the quality that they had in their squad.
Just goes to show what a cut throat the football industry has become, I'm sure the incumbent manager will steer them to a successful season but I'm not sure that sacking Ross was necessary.

Last season Sunderland received 30m in a parachute payment from the Premier League. They also signed players like Will Gregg for 4m. With those resources available they should have gone straight back up last season. Now, the parachute payments have stopped, the financial belt is being tightened. They will soon lose most of the financial benefits they have over virtually every other club in Div 1. Is it any wonder Ross got the sack?
