Good write-up. Sounds a fair account of the action.

Great fightback by the quarters yesterday, they never gave up and were rewarded with a point. I think we have to accept that Graham has a very limited squad as regards creative ability at his disposal. Probably 75% of our attacking threat comes from JCH, 20% from Sercombe and the rest contribute to the other 5%. With JCH and Sercombe out of the team Graham's options are very limited as has been all to clear with some of the recent results. As Wilmslowgas says get those two fit with THD and Little as well and I think we've got a side capable of a top half finish. PS going back to Steve K's OP sorry can't agree about Phillips being a good keeper - absolutely clueless with crosses and didn't command his 6 yard box. yes agreed. I'd say JCH about 60% (stats show 7 in 11 I think), when Leahy and Hare (sadly missed) are playing well they give us another 10-15 % as they both can put in the ammunition for JCH and possibly others. I also think Ed Upson is more creative than some think. On another note, re. fightback - Pompey had only conceded 12 in 12 games so we did brilliantly to pull it back to 2 - 2.

Long thumps from the back? I didn't see any and, in fact, the team was praised several times by Brookman and the BBC bloke for keeping it on the ground. There's a difference between hoofing it to clear the danger and passing it long as a weapon of attack. The modern game embraces both when needs be. The long pass is used all the time in the PL and Leicester would never have won the league or put nine past Saints without it. We are not boring to watch at all, that's a myth created by the anti-Coughlan pro-Clarke contingent. We actually play good expansive football. Ogogo is great to watch. A midfielder who actually wins the ball and retains it. He did a lovely up and under yesterday that nearly resulted. You can call that a long thump if you like. Rodman is a delight on the eye with his little turns and twists. Pity he's not an out and out forward. Sercombe turned the game when he came on. Let's hope he doesn't get injured again and leave us lopsided with too many average midfielders again. Yakoooola was immense and pulled off a couple of worldies. Nothing to moan about. When Clarke-Harris and Hare returns it'll all come good again. DC has lost 6 in a row at Walsall by the way. Nothing to do with DC, he has gone. Sorry, GC has got the results but the football at times in dreadful to watch. Yesterday was one of the better games.

Football dreadful to watch? You must be watching a different game!
I thought we played a great deal of the game with ball on the deck - unfortunately the front two didn't have the awareness or physical presence to hold onto it.
I enjoyed watching the fight back in the last 20 minutes and manager wasn't afraid to change the system to make that happen.
We should be getting behind this bunch of good, honest triers like Ogogo and the young central defenders who are keeping us in with a shout despite the long list of injuries.
If you didn't enjoy that yesterday then I suggest just watching the Premiership with their bloated forty man squads!

I enjoyed the game yesterday,it was real ding-dong of a match. Portsmouth were very slick when attacking and breaking away in the first half but we were always in the game with ogogo making endless tackles and rodman making good runs down the wing. The 2 loan strikers are a bit of a worry because we need more from them in terms of being a goal threat imo.

The thread headlines talks of covering up the cracks! I honestly think that GC has performed miracles with the budget he has and the quality of the squad he inherited. He has introduced an energy into the team that I thought was impossible to achieve. And when JCH, THD, Hare and Sercombe are fully fit then we might well be back in the mix. We had two kids up front on Saturday in atrocious conditions and they never gave up. Agogo was everywhere and the keeper was magnificent. Our back three struggled to get to grips with the swirling wind but it’s time to be optimistic I would say.

Must be awful for GC having to manage with the duds he inherited like upson, craig, kilgour, rodman and sercombe. The mid table budget must a killer as well, being forced to sign experienced players on a decent wage like jaakola,little,clarke-harris,ogogo and davies. Its a miracle were not bottom of the league.

Four of those five were, for me, going through the motions. Results tended to bear this out. Alfie was untried at the time. You conveniently fail to mention Payne and Bennett. Cracking successes they turned out to be.

I agree - fortunately the new manager was able to get the "dud" Upson playing to his ability and was astute enough to bring the young Kilgour into the team permanently. Then the 'new' manager was clever enough to sign at least 4/5 decent players with no transfer fee involved after getting rid of most of the dead wood at the club. Amazing how many players are left at the club in such a short time from what he inherited. I don't agree its a miracle we're not bottom of the league - fair play to the manager - looks to me as though he's got the players playing for him.

You’re right. It’s just that I automatically think of Junior when I write it. Strange.

Cracking successes they turned out to be. So how many matches, months or years will any defeats or failure not be Coughlans fault? What final position would justify the miracle that coughlan has performed? Would any poor final position simply be the last managers fault? GC has signed about 11 players so is it his team yet or still the other blokes team?

For whatever reason the team were in a downward spiral. DC’s methods had stopped working. He can’t expect all the plaudits of the previous years without accepting the brickbats. It doesn’t work like that.
