Nice to see Will Puddy having a great game for Chippenham as they lost 3-0 to Northampton. His rabbit in the headlights first 20 minutes at Wembley, still gives me nightmares. Zebroski in the team as well. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50290463

Come on, bit harsh to start a thread about a player who did his best in the quest to drag this club off it’s knees.
Not very good? Probably, but doesn’t deserve his own thread mocking his ability.

Totally agree. Puffy wasn't the greatest ever Rovers goalkeeper and it's true he had a nightmare opening 20 minutes at Wembley. However, he played a major role in our Conference season and as I recall he played well enough to keep a more esteemed goalkeeper on the bench ......

To be fair I’m sure we could argue over whether it was deserved that he kept Mildenhall out of the team as objectively, Mildenhall was the better keeper...but in retrospect he was fouled v Dover and that was the referees fault more than Puddy and yes, he had a nightmare 20 minutes at Wembley but ultimately we got promoted and we are back in league 1. If we were still in the conference thanks to his nightmare 20 minutes in the play off final I could perhaps understand the recriminations. As it is we’ve gone on to better things and he played his part in that. We should wish him well.

It would actually be an interesting thread (that I’ll leave someone else to start) about who *didn’t* give their all for the Gas. I would at least like to think that *most* wanted the club to win even if their ability may not have been enough to achieve that aim week in week out. Professionals who took to the pitch with no competitive spirit and who didn’t care whether we won or lost, well, I suspect we have had very very few of those.

Looks like he's found his level.

Mildly was shocking that year but redeemed himself the year after. Puddy did for us what was asked of him, yes scary opening 20 at Wembley but how some people come on here and disrespect him is beyond me. Definitely fouled at Dover

Fortunately we recovered from it. Seems like a decent guy but he was pretty atrocious for us.

If you’re going to apply old school interpretations then yes he wasn’t but I have seen many many many goals ruled out for far less than that incident Puddy was involved in where the Dover player lead with his elbow. In the modern era it was extremely unlucky to have such a goal not ruled out.

I’m not mocking his ability, I always liked Will which is why I’m pleased he played so well on tv. His first 20 minutes at Wembley was incredibly nervous but he settled and did a decent job. A lot of the Conference team were not amongst the best players to ever turn out for Rovers, but certainly amongst the most committed, which is probably why we all have such a soft spot for them. That and saving us from who knows what if we hadn’t bounced straight back into the league. The result aside, I found every minute of the Grimsby game (Ellis’s equaliser and Mansell’s penalty aside), absolute torture.

As I recall, Mildy came on as sub for Puddy towards the end of the match as he was viewed by the management as the better penalty stopper. Or did I get that wrong? Actually, that game was worse than torture. That was one time when the football gods smiled on us!

We saved our worst performance in months for the play off final and someone managed to get the job done. I just could not enjoy the game at all. Watching the highlights of today, I’d forgotten how small Puddy was.

Say what you like about Puddy He’s no Kelle Roos I see what you mean, but taking a step back isn’t it nice to be able to even contemplate that debate? I don’t like the idea that we should always think of ourselves as refugees from darker times, but, for all my annoyance that GC is taking us backwards on the pitch it does bear remembrance that it wasn’t too long ago that we would have been comparing Puddy with Barnet’s keeper and wondering who got the better deal! Whatever happened to the manager that got us promoted to league one? Hmm....
