Earlier i commented on the carbon footprint thread, Think it would be great if the Football special trains were brought back for games where a lot of away fans want to attend (Ipswich away comes to mind) especially awkward road trips. Now that footie fans are "Ahem" (Majority of) better behaved it would reduce the footprint if you have 500 plus wanting to go, also anyone recall their trips away on them, i can remember a few Ipswich in the cup Fulham, Luton when game was called off on the way etc etc.

I used to get the train from sea mills to TM changing for the Portsmouth harbour service to oldfield Park....
British rail, Twerton chippy, Third division champions.... What a time to be alive!

I remember getting a special bus to watch a derby match at Ashton Gate. It left plenty of carbon footprints from its tyres as it tore through Southmead, Henbury, El Dub and Shirehampton before bombing along the Portway. It was like a bus depot outside the ground as buses turned up from all over Bristol and parked ready to make the return journey.

Actually a good idea - is it down to the club to charter a special, or do the train operators decide to do so if they think the demand is there?

Not sure who it is down to but i think it would be good idea and a lot cheaper, i would love to go but it is about £95 return on train on top of a scandalous £27 to get in, that is a lot of money just before Xmas.

From a different angle - I was a trainspotter back in the day and it was great to see locos way out of their normal part of the country. Would cause great excitement among gricers.

Back in the late 70's & early 80's we seemed to have special trains to some weird and wonderful places. Plenty to local rivals such as Swindon, Cardiff, Swansea, Hereford, Plymouth and Portsmouth but to some strange games up North Bolton, Rotherham, Lincoln & Wigan from memory. Not forgetting Cup games as already mentioned a couple to Ipswich and Arsenal in the League Cup. Those were the days - perhaps not as on many occasions there were not many windows for the trip back home!

Or toilet rolls, I think it got canned because it was too risky and more profitable to hire supporters coaches.

I remember going on the one they did for Norwich away (maybe about ten years ago now). I remember it being pretty popular that day but I don't think they've done one again since.

Now we have a thread whose title is close to my heart! some of you will be aware that my user name stems from the name of this very thread, The football special. Wont bore you all again with to much detail but think 1963, third division relegation battle at Halifax town and the somewhat primitive surroundings of The Shay! Football special from Stapleton road, packed with Rovers fans making there presence known through every town on route, and we won 3-2 and survived In third division, great memories all the details on prev thread about user names, anyone else on board? this was pre hooligan days, would it work now, would love to think so but not sure.

Too much money, £25000 per hire, not enough drivers, stock and locomotives and more importantly, not enough operators willing to sign up to run football specials. Does that answer the question?

I don't think there will be any more soccer specials. There is no spare rolling stock because the demand for regular services, even at the weekend where they struggle to run all the time tabled trains because of staffing issues means every serviceable train is in use. There is also an issue with trains going to other parts of the country and having to use tracks that are used by other TOCs, it would mean crew changes for route knowledge and there would also be an issue with track availability. There is so much rail traffic to meet regular demand I can't see there's the capacity for soccer specials.
A shame, but the railway is an increasing popular mode of regular travel.

How does a heritage rail tour provider like West Coast Railways manage to squeeze their specials in between the regular timetable? ...asking for a friend. 👋🚂

Dear Friend, no problem planning specials in between service trains.................West Coast are masters at this, other train operators are suitably qualified at this.

I’ll drive it (yes I am qualified to!) but as alluded to in the post earlier in the thread it might just be financially prohibitive in today’s Railway, sadly.

Maximum load 3 with a 31 would cost £140.00 break even....................................................quicker and cheaper to cycle to Ipswich
