Well he has made 28 appearances so I doubt it is a lack of game time that has made the decision. He would have been involved in more games if it wasn't for his stupid injury that he gave himself. I think it is case of that he joined us because of Coughlan's contacts at Sheff Utd. Now Coughlan is not here and I doubt the player himself is happy with what is going on at the club right now, I guess Smith has asked Sheff Utd to get him back and go elsewhere.

On Rovers official twitter. Edit: Joined Rochdale on loan till end of season Curious if we terminated his loan (perhaps, in part, because of his self inflicted injury) or whether Sheffield Utd recalled him to loan to Rochdale? Otherwise it all happened very quickly... I did rate him actually. Thought he added some pace to our front line and his goal record wasn't as bad as some other forwards in the squad... I guess we will roll the dice and get another young, unproven striker on loan and cross our fingers that we get a L1 goalscorer..! Probably said to his agent "FFS get me out of this madness" what's the betting he's fit enough to make Rochdale's squad on Saturday, as a back up striker he seemed good enough, although I guess not that much better than Reilly.

Scored against Ipswich, the last time we scored a league goal from open play.
5 whole games ago.
Our last 2 open play goalscorers has joined Rochdale and the other ones been told he can leave.
Funny old game, innit.

I thought he had a lot of potential in the right system. I don't blame Sheff Utd for recalling him as we're just a mess at the moment and I wonder whether there's also geographical reasons in play too. Either way it's Rovers's loss as we're unlikely to get a better replacement.

We must be a laughing stock to most of the bigger clubs - and Our record for looking after loanees is shocking !
Really hoping BG can improve our reputation with the bigger clubs!
Thought Smith was ok to be fair โฆ. oh well !

Liked Smith. A little leightweight but always lively, good finisher and quite pacey.
With the exception of JCH I always felt he was our most likely scorer.
I expect he'll do well at Rochdale.

Worth noting that he spent time at two different clubs as a loanee last season.
Admittedly, there was a step up in leagues from pre to post January in 2019 but could show that Sheff want to get him a variety of experiences.
I know the geographical reasons point is a controversial one at the moment but his three other loan spells (Barrow, Doncaster, Rochdale) are much closer to Sheffield than us.
Worth taking these points into consideration before riding the mopey bandwagon down Muller Road.
I liked Smith for his movement but he was pushed around too much and looked to buy free kicks without the success that JCH gets. Like all of our strikers group at the moment (excluding JCH) there's potential in theory but not in practice.

Bit of a shame this. Seemed to have a half decent partnership with JCH earlier in the season and was the only one apart from him capable of putting the ball in the net. Hopefully means a permanent signing instead.

Perhaps Rochdale want him to show them how to play out from the back after last nightโs debacle against the Toon.

Good luck to him.
Need a striker or two in to replace him and the seemingly unwanted Victor and Nichols now.

I suspect Sheffield United looked at our stats since GC left and worked out that even if he was fully fit and played every minute of our 20 remaining games that would mean heโd only get 4 more shots and only one of them would be on target. They need him to get more experience in front of goal than that!

Personally now Smiths left , hope it allows us to keep Reilly who I thought looked pretty bright & useful when he came on as sub against Donny.

Personally now Smiths left , hope it allows us to keep Reilly who I thought looked pretty bright & useful when he came on as sub against Donny. Unless Cheltenham want him back he can't now go anywhere now, Reilly on Saturday looked just as good as Smith, although knowing Reilly that might have been is one good game in 10! I like the way the othe poster suggests Barrow is a lot closer to Sheffield than Bristol! Given he got 28 games for us and only 14 for Donny we seemed to have given him plenty of game time plus surely Rochdale is a step down, or have we now dropped that low that they are seen to offer loan players more potential?
