.In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. Lest We Forget. They gave their today for our tomorrow.

Good turn out today at the memorial in Mangotsfield. Nice to see so many people of all different age groups paying their respect.

Why are we hijacking a football forum to put forward political/personal views, I'm 100% behind the rememberance day but not behind the PC theme of being seen to be taking part, another example is having to wear poppies on TV, if it's a personal choice fine but when all and sundrie have to be seen to be towing the line it wears thin!
Guys no disrespect meant really but it jars me off, seems we're all programmed to be sheep now, tow the line your fine dare not too and your chastised.

In the rising of the sun and in its going down, We remember them. In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter, We remember them. In the opening of buds and in the rebirth of spring, We remember them. In the blueness of the skies and in the warmth of summer, We remember them. In the rustling of the leaves and in the beauty of autumn, We remember them. In the beginning of the year and when it ends, We remember them. When we are weary and in need of strength, We remember them. When we are lost and sick at heart, We remember them. When we have joys and special celebrations we yearn to share, We remember them. When we see our nation's young marching behind our flag or hear Taps played, We remember them. So long as we live, they too shall live, for they are part of us. And when we answer the final roll, we know that they will fulfill their duty and greet us with words of compassion and friendship, peace and love: Welcome home

Understand where you are coming from mate, but IMO not political but just respect for those who have died for what they believed in.
Tried to quote you but haven't yet worked out this new forum

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the Sun and in the morning, We will remember them.

Or my favourite, less well known, by Kipling:
'My Boy Jack'
1914-18
"HAVE you news of my boy Jack? " Not this tide. "When d'you think that he'll come back?" Not with this wind blowing, and this tide. "Has any one else had word of him?" Not this tide. For what is sunk will hardly swim, Not with this wind blowing, and this tide.
"Oh, dear, what comfort can I find?" None this tide, Nor any tide, Except he did not shame his kind--- Not even with that wind blowing, and that tide.
Then hold your head up all the more, This tide, And every tide; Because he was the son you bore, And gave to that wind blowing and that tide.

Respect shown by everyone this weekend....except Celtic supporters at Aberdeen, but expect no less. I believe that some Celtic supporters like to oppose anything to do with the British army, identifying themselves with Irish republicanism, so it was probably deliberate and political. I think some of them protested against the poppy on their green hoops some years ago. Although adverts for cider are apparently ok.

It might have something to do with the fact that most people are incredibly respectful of the fact that thousands of teenagers ran straight into a hail of bullets and subsequent death so people could enjoy freedom, lots of people are related to people who sacrificed thier lives so the emotion is evern greater. The shameful part is people like yourself and many other ungreatful sorts can take freedom for granted yet show no respect for just one day a year. Makes me ill to think of past family members and friends who have died and been seriously injured to defendview points such as yours. Can I suggest you also complain to Sky Sports News for releasing the name of a soldier who was a Gashead who lost his life in conflict and got the recognition he deserved today.

Ah, the beauty of 5,000 or 10,000 or 50,000 men women and children at an 'entertainment venue' falling silent to remember how 'we' earnt the right to live in a country where we can choose to observe it or not, wear a poppy or not... We have not had a home match to pay our respects at our ground which honours the sacrifice of so many sportsmen...I hope the club will be honouring it on Sat 15th vs Kidderminster. I don't care about TV celebs, or Celtic fans. I care about my club and fellow fans showing respect at this time, in this year, in this ground.

remembering the dead is not political....
when I remember friends and relatives who passed away it's not political, the same for people who gave their lives in the war....
it's about respect....

Darren, totally understand where you are coming from, it is a personal choice that I know you follow.
I was in Central London yesterday as one of thousands marching past the Cenetaph, the public support is amazing. Each & every one of the marching contingents & the spectators are generally there because they choose to.
I was gong to attend the Mem this Tuesday, but I am attending the funeral of an old soldier in W-S-M.
We will remember them.
Onwards & upwards my fellow Gas friends

I was gong to attend the Mem this Tuesday, but I am attending the funeral of an old soldier in W-S-M. We will remember them. Onwards & upwards my fellow Gas friends Morning Phil I was feeling a little mischievous I have to admit, sometimes to put a different view forward brings out some very interesting debate, see above! As you know my step father is a retired Royal Signals you may not know that my two Grandfathers were Royal Airforce & Highland Light Infantry, I'm pro our forces wore my poppy purchased at Morrisons Cribbs last Thursday with pride and observed the minutes silence at yesterdays Boco v Manor Farm cup game before going on to run the line. I do however think its all to easy to put your point of view on a football forum, if it has to go on at all have a section for popular views, beliefs and respect, keep it of the football debate pages! In this country it appears were all being pushed in line to adapt the idealistic views of others more powerful in a very discreet way. If you dare to be seen to have a different view, reach for your hard hat! Main story on Radio Bristol this morning single men & women are not allowed to visit a Puxton Park in WSM. PC idiots gone mad, but who are they the ones behind this, making these calls? They will be the same ones who deem it necessary for all and sundry to where a poppy on TV, and if you prefer not too, I doubt you will be in your job for much longer? Surely this is contrary to what those young men and women fought for all those years ago? Regards mate, see you soon.
