A quote from one of many Garner interviews has him saying this. ‘Tactical periodisation forms the basis of my methodology’. I despair at this modern garbage and wonder whether he inhabits the same planet as most of us. I gave him 4 months when he was appointed and have no desire to change my forecast.

I don't understand why people are continually posting that he has to go. I'm not sure how anyone genuinely thinks that he'll be sacked 2 weeks after a transfer window in which we signed 7 players, it doesn't matter how many times you post it. We are improving, maybe not at the rate we'd all like but the performances in the last few games are a huge improvement on the MK Dons shambles. He'll be here until the summer at the very least and personally I'll back him until then. Unfortunately at the moment whatever he does whether that's pre or post match interviews, team selection or substitutions are being picked apart, he even got criticism for not picking 2 players v Coventry that weren't eligible anyway. IMO his tenure really started from the moment he came back from his time away, we've improved since then so let's see where the rest of the season takes us.

Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders is reportedly an admirer of the concept and similar approaches are used by Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino.

I'm yet to be convinced "Tactical Periodisation" works with 3rd Division Footballers.

Of course the good old fashioned view is that managers are there to shout a lot and make players 'want it' more than the opposition. It assumes players are entirely incapable of motivating themselves and need a strict daddy figure to kick them up the arse. "Modern garbage" suggests a clear system and tactical know how aimed at getting the most out of players might just also motivate them and instil confidence.

I'm yet to be convinced "Tactical Periodisation" works with 3rd Division Footballers. I think it can work with any level of footballers from grassroots upwards. A crude way of explaining the philosophy is basically getting players to train for a match situation in a smarter way and do more of the fitness work with the ball structured on what you would expect from a 90 minute game scenario. The real benefits of tactical periodisation will probably be felt after a full pre-season.

Because the managers you quote, with the exception of Pep, practice it. Let’s hope the Dog and Duck don’t get wind of it cos they won’t know what’s hit them.

I don’t think anyone can expect anything but some boos if we are getting tanked at home on Saturday. Hopefully the tide finally turns! As if not BG’s days will be numbered. UTG

He destroyed any sort of confidence any of the players had. His job is to motivate them and make them play/feel confidently. It is literally all his fault. I don’t feel sorry for him at all. When he eventually gets sacked he’ll have made his money and taken his nice pay out. He won’t have to worry and support the club in the tatters he left it in. Yeah poor Ben, really feel sorry for the bloke. Interesting to read why Megson sent BG home when at West Brom ...wanted a more bouncy and motivating attitude on the training ground. If thats the case then its win on saturday against Blackpool or its a bye bye from me in regards to BG.. I would then want that followed up by at least 5 other wins between now and the seasons end to show what he is doing is working going into next year. People say you need to give him time, but its 13/14 games without a victory now.The last few games have been better, and yes we should have won but we haven't... simple! Going back to your Megson comment if that is indeed true that Gary did do that then its again win on Saturday or bust as thats not just a habit at WBA BG had, but a trait of how he works as he has shown already here. I've said since I stood behind him in the tinpot trophy game vs Stevenage that he showed a lack of emotion, leadership and fight on the sidelines. He just stood there with his arms crossed for 90mins all game.No yelling or emotion shown what so ever that night...I was not impressed. Im not saying a bully of a manager works, but as GC proved here against Southend that the hair dryer treatment works when needed. And Im sure if BG had that in his locker and used it we would still not be looking for his first win. I want it to work for Ben, I hope we win every game between now and May.But he maybe a great coach but a awlful manager. He has had time to show that this is not the case,so far he hasn't.

I managed to catch the final 35 minutes of the game on ifollow and felt it worth mentioning I’ve been a massive critic of Ollie Clarke this season, I don’t think he’s shown close to the ability he’s shown in previous seasons, but from what I saw today he looked very much back to the man I remember, I wish he’d have shot more in the game but regardless in the final 35 at least I thought he lead our attacks very well, I hope he can keep that up now and start adding goals to his game again as well! Interested because there's been plenty of talk about his motivation skills and personality but nothing other than GasChat opinion to back it up.
Apparently its fact because one man (Megson) says so. Ignores the fact Pulis and others thought he was ok

It's been little short of a disaster.
Sure, I've seen some green shoots of better football but last nights result is really poor and I'm running out of excuses to defend BG.
This cant be allowed to go on much longer.

We've looked a lot better in the last couple of games but I still didn't really believe we were gonna win the game after the first half tbh. The confidence doesn't seem to be there from the players atm, then again 1 good result could change that.
I certainly don't feel sorry for him as he's paid good money compared to most jobs involved in a sport he clearly loves and he's not getting the results needed on the pitch. I've been someone who has said a few times I'm willing to give him time but I think we have to put a realistic limit on that time before we become a laughing stock. 13/14 games without a win in all competitions is ridiculous regardless of the circumstances, really hoping for a result against Blackpool or I can see it getting very toxic for BG.

Any examples of it being employed successfully in the English lower leagues? Garner is obviously a crap manager, the ridiculous decline in results don't lie, but we are stuck with him so just have to hope we can start scraping some results together. UTG
