There have been many times this season; particularly since Christmas; where spending two hours to write a report has been quite frankly difficult because it is not fun to write bad things about the team you love.Today I feel totally deflated trying to find plus points from what was an absolutely awful display from the first minute to the last so I will keep it brief.Why should I give two hours where the team can't be bothered to give us 90 minutes
Blackman 9 MOM The only player who can honestly say he had a good game. It was a top class display of goalkeeping- doing all the basics right and also producing three wonderful saves. He is so aware and quick off his line that he cuts things out at the source and his handling yesterday in difficult conditions were first class.
Kilgour 6 Unlucky not to score. Passing was questionable at times
Menayese 6 ok
Craig 5.5 Too much hoofing and didn't really breed much confidence into others
Leahy 4 Awful . Too slow in everything he does and wastes too many passes
Upson 5 Just about the best of the three but that's not saying much
Clarke 3 awful should have been taken off before half time
Sercombe 4 generally poor and dint creare much and free kick in a good position was woeful
Ginnelly 3.5 Out muscled
Clarke-Harris 5 tried hard and some good runs but looks frustrated and injury could see him missing for a few games.
Mitchell-Lawson 3.5 Out muscled but should have scored with one of our few clear chances
Subs: Abraham 3 A kid amongst men
Daly 6 Looked talented and must now start
Rodman nole
Crowd 5 Summed up the performance on the pitch.Quiet
Ref 7 Very good
Shrewsbury 5.5 A very poor team but physically strong and we never matched them.
BG Unfortunately when your Manager comes out after the game and says that the players produced nothing of the match plan or instructions you have to question whether they are either capable of the plans or just not interested enough to follow them. Either way I would say that if that was the case why did it take 63 minutes to make a substitution and then only made for an injury! I have long felt that one up front has come from the top coaches who have an abundance of quality in midfield in which they want to play all these midfielders in the team but the fact is that all season we have had a lacklustre midfield and I would go as far to say as the worst midfield in this division. It gives me no delight whatsoever to say "Told you so" but the fact is the one up front has not worked at all and all it has done is make our biggest asset JCH look a very ordinary striker who is not enjoying plying his trade in this way. I am still just in the camp of give Ben Garner a little longer to prove that he is not "out of his depth" but if he keeps up his present tactics at Southend next week after yesterdays debacle then I will soon fall into the "get rid" brigade because it hasn't worked and with 1 win in 17 it is not suddenly going to workand at the moment we will struggle to get another two wins from our remaining games because believe me Shrewsbury were absolutely dreadful but they were better than us.
Southend up next and whilst their results have been disastrous the best I can see us getting is a point and my only real hope for this season is that Tranmere don't pick up! UTG

That win against Blackpool feels like we won the fa cup or something....
As I said in another thread, we need at least 12 points from the remaining 11 games to go into next season with the bare minimum of hope....

A good summary as always Steve.
Listening to the after match interview, leaves you questionning players committment and ability. How can you practice methods of play all week and then not remotely follow them through on a match day ?
5 shots in a home game with only one on target is abysmal, we had more the previous week without the specific practice on attacking and getting shots in.
I dont doubt the managers commitment and tactical knowledge, however what I do question now is whether his knowledge and experience is too much for our players at this level, thats why they are in League 1.
Other clubs would have acted by now on this degree of poor performances and results - what is the answer though ?
My own feeling is that this season is all but written off now, so either we get a new experienced manager in to start the rebuild, and give him a contract until the end of next season OR we get someone in to work alongside Ben Garner and mentor him to this leagues level of playing - one person who springs to mind, like him or loath him, but a proven track record could be Neil Warnock, I feel he would shake some of our squad up for sure.

Glad I wasn’t there yesterday, I will not be renewing my season ticket next year. It has become a chore, going to the Mem. All I can see that’s happened so far, our biggest asset looks mediocre at best, and the rest of the players don’t look up for it. I don’t even see a game plan?

The Manager has lost all credibility now …. as you say he cannot turn up on the post match report and say players didn't follow his instructions - Your fault mate no one else.
Final straw for me yesterday wasn't the tragic starting line up / formation , wasn't the fact that our worst player is Captain, nor the fact that the waste of space Bennett was on the bench, but the fact that when JCH came off rather than bringing on Abraham and Daly in a 442 he just left the young lad up there on his own …. ok he changed it a while later but Sorry this chap is simply not good enough.

If Garner wants to play high press 433 then he absolutely has to understand he cannot do it with Craig in back 4. With Leahy as a left back. With Alfie as a rb. With Upson and Clarke together and with Ginelly floating around the place.
Who the hell plays an out and out centre half at RB when it’s not enforced? Not only is it stupid but it was completely ineffective. And not only that, see it not working but continue with the nonsense all game. Go 352. I mean it’s so obvious. The subs were there to change it.

As has been said above i think he's not recognised the fact he's dealing with League 1 players. Players who haven't the ability to do what he's trying to do. GC saw what he had and managed it to the players ability but how is Garner going to turn this around? He's had 17/18 games whatever, he's not going to wave a magic wand and suddenly we're scoring at will and winning games. Surely if it doesn't look like there's foundations now there ain't going to be. Im beginning to wonder if he's lost the dressing room through disinterest and also what's his state of mind following the "family illness"? Is that ongoing? I think its time to go. People are saying give him a summer transfer window, and do what with what? Are we suddenly going to have millions to spend on better players than we have already? He'll only be able to get like for like
Time to go im afraid Mr Garner, turn the light off on your way out

Agree with comments on Blackman. He’s really positive in everything he does and refreshing to have a keeper always alert and looking to roll the ball out and get us going. It’s a shame the defenders can only then lump it forward, harsh to blame them totally for this because they don’t really have many options because the movement of our midfield and attacking players is awful. I think some are hiding and with a manager wanting to play progressive, passing football this is worrying. They need to be braver and want the ball.
Another question I’d like an answer to. Why is THD constantly being left out? He’s probably our best player but stays on the bench. Is BG looking to keep him fresh for midweek development squad games!

We should be playing a central defensive 3 with wing backs. We would be far more solid and attacking at the same time. I think the squad is better suited to 5-3-2. We’ve bought in a ball playing centre half and have excellent wingbacks in Hare and THD, it also allows three in centre midfield so we don’t get outnumbered in the middle and enables someone to play high up in support of JCH. However, BG, like a lot of managers these days wants to have a 4-3-3 or variant of it. My question in response to the earlier post criticising selection is that if we are playing a flat back four who should have been picked as right back instead of Alfie? |

God we miss Hare, unbelievable to say it for a lad who only played about 8 games before injury and came from Level 5, but he was a breath of fresh air. Hopefully, we will see him get some minutes soon. UTG. |

My take is the whole system of 4-3-3 seems disjointed and either the players don't understand what they are being asked to do, or they are incapable making the system work. BG has pretty much stuck to this system from day one, barring a few exceptions, so they've had plenty to time to bed it down.
He's done this inheriting a squad built to play Coughlan Ball, then trying to change the squad in the Jan window.
I suspect BG is being unrealistic with the players he has.
We are not Palace or West Brom, 4-4-3 may be trendy in the Championship or Premier League but this is League One, not only is he not shopping in Harrods, he's working with a squad that are not even good League One players.
I recall saying this about Mark McGee. Coaching and managing in the higher divisions with some success doesn't mean you can repeat that in lower divisions and vice versa. All four top divisions have their own challenges and idiosyncrasies. There's more blood, guts and thunder in League One and Two, making up for lesser ability with being more physical.
BG needs to find a way and system that this group understand and with which they can produce. 4-3-3 is not that system. He also needs to acclimatise to League One football and quickly.
Another transfer window will not change much, he still won't have a budget to bring in players to make his current philosophy work.
