Could have signed Charlie Austin, but Trolls thought he was playing at too low a level to bother with. Didn't he also go to watch Matt Tubbs at Salisbury and claimed he'd never make it in the football league

Trolls also had the chance to sign Gazzaniga as Gary Penrice invited Ed Ware to the scouting camp where he was being watched. Ed rang Trolls as He was available for £500 per week on a 2 year deal. Trolls didn’t want him so Hessenthaler took him for Gillingham and made £2.6m on him 6 months later.

I always thought we should've pinched someone from the Yeovil side got promoted from the conference. I guess Gavin William's would have been the one.
I also think the immediate enquiry after losing Taylor should have been to get Conor Chaplin. Might not have come still.

Andy Johnson Gas fan ex WBA He had a moved lined up to play for us under Trolls and was desperate to join, but Lennie Lawrence didn't want to know and convinced Trolls not to do the deal. Was prepared to play for peanuts.

Nigel Pierre. Though we actually did sign him apparently we shouldn't have. Played one game and returned to Trinidad

As Messi is leaving Barca, surely it is obvious he wants to come here?

Nigel Pierre. Though we actually did sign him apparently we shouldn't have. Played one game and returned to Trinidad He played in 3 games for us. He came off the bench for his debut at The Mem, I think it was against Wycombe and he looked brilliant. His other 2 appearances were away at Oldham where he came on as sub, and away at Bury where I think he started. We couldn't get a Work Permit for him as Trinidad didn't have a high enough ranking in the FIFA Coefficient or something along those lines, despite him scoring 22 goals in 58 games for them. It was a ridiculous rule, and one I still can't get my head round, as clubs then, just like they do now sign players from all over the globe with no issues whatsoever. Typical Rovers. Eh!

Christ, if you add up the transfer fees of all the players he wrote off that’s a staggering sum.

Yeah it was Wycombe at home. I was there but can’t recall my thoughts on Pierre. It was a bizarre situation in a bizarre season. Just another plot twist in the rich tapestry of incidents that resulted in us blowing a lead at the top of the table in March when we should have been home and dry.

Just another plot twist in the rich tapestry of incidents that resulted in us blowing a lead at the top of the table in March when we should have been home and dry. It really was a bizarre season, and one which still gives me nightmares, 20 years later. The 5 strikers we had on our books was Jamie Cureton, Jason Roberts, Nathan Ellington, Bobby Zamora and Nigel Pierre(Imagine having that depth now). Cureton scored 24 goals, Roberts scored 25, Nathan Ellington chipped in with 4 as an 18 year old mostly coming off the bench, and then Mark Walters who chipped in with 9 goals, we also signed The Latvian in Feb/March which would surely be the final piece of the jigsaw to go on to get promoted with ease. Then apart from beating City we failed to win 9 of our last 10 games to finish 7th and miss out on the Play Offs altogether. Unbelievable, you couldn't make it up.

The Nigel Pierre song was the only thing about the Bury away game that I remember fondly, one of the most boring games I've ever had the misfortune to be at. To keep the thread on track though I'll bring up Danny Invincible and Akinfenwa. Both linked to us over multiple transfer windows. Both had a decent record of scoring against us too.

I am pretty certain that we chased Tommy Mooney as well, either Ian Atkins or Paul Trollope, or even both.
He always used to score against us for a host of clubs
