Good luck to DC. Glad he’s beginning to turn Walsall around, but he needs to, Walsall should be League 1 and I hope they do it. Fans not happy earlier this season and I feared for him. I miss games against them and it was good to watch them play us in the cup. UTG!

Find it weird people saying Walsall should be League 1. Based on what?
Fair play to him, made them hard to beat and seems to have installed that never say never attitude with the players he had when managing us. Makes mistakes but he’s not scared to change things and it’s baffling that people complain about him being a tinker man when for the most part it works out.

I agree Walsalls SHOULD be league one, but we should’ve been league one when we went down at the turn of the millennium and we know how that turned out, and Sunderland have found out that the leagues you drop into aren’t going to let you have promotion on a plate, or should I say as a “fishy on a dishy”
The issue is you can be a big club in a lower league but you will find it hard to get players at the level you think you are (ie the league above) to play for you. You may get a few who can’t get a contract and the better players in your division. That guarantees nothing.
This is why I was so, so grateful we won that playoff and got back from non-league at the first attempt. We could have been down there 20 years. Unlikely but these things do happen.

It could be worse - WE COULD BE YEOVIL TOWN.

Disadvantages are not settled team, not always your best 11, confusion over roles. Advantages are having a squad who all feel included and have a chance, most of them are always match fit having played some games, less injuries as less stress on players physiques, no cliqueyness, can resale more players as all will have some league games in prev season. On balance I like more tinkering than less. People forget it’s a football club, made of people and other realities other than playing your best players, all the time, have an impact.

I agree it’s strange people think Walsall should be in L1. Based on what? Crowd size? Not really, they always seemed to have lowish crowds and have no history of selling out home games and having large travelling support. The size of the town? Not really. Walsall is a small Black Country town which is part of a large conurbation and has much bigger, well supported clubs like Wolves, Villa and West Brom on the doorstep. History? Again, not really. They’ve mostly bumped along in the 3rd and 4th tiers, with the occasional run in one of the cups. I’d say they are equally at home in L1 or L2. Having said that I do quite like Walsall. They strike me as a no-nonsense working-class club, always up against it and fighting their bigger, more illustrious neighbours for support. I wonder how many cars you see departing the town for Villa, West Brom and Wolves on a match day? A shame really.

Brfc ...prem 0.. cham 19.. lg1 63.. lg2 10 Walsall prem 0.. cham 15.. lg1 75 ..lg2 10 Highest league placing Brfc 28th Walsall 24th Average crowd over history. Brfc....facup..quarter finals 3 ........lge cup quarter finals 2 ........fltrophy finalists 2 Walsall..facup..quarter finals 0 .........lge cup..semi finals 1 ..........fltrophy finalists 1 So reasonably similar histories. Rovers have on average a third bigger crowds and have done a little better in the cups. Walsall are a mainstay of league one football.

My mate's a Scumbo, says they love him there, one of their best signings in recent years, also says Nicholson is class but apparently got a lot of grief at the Pink Palace so he wasn't surprised he didn't want to go back there. Mate of mine who’s a jambo tells me the rivalry between them and the spoon burning junky b******s as he puts it (hibs) is massive. And when they play each other it’s carnage... I told him your never experience anything like when the gas play the teds.... but he won’t have it!! The rivalry is just as intense if not more as the two play each other all the time and are usually vying for a top six finish, plus the added ingredient of some sectarianism, particularly from the dark side. Actually in football terms Edinburgh and Bristol are very similar, one slightly larger cub that thinks it's massive and likes to splash the cash whenever it can the other, tends to keep it's head down and get on with it. Jambos like to belittle Hibs even though there isn't much between them in fan base or success, or lack thereof, over the years. The only difference is that Easter Road is actually a decent stadium and definitely better than the sh** pit in Gorgie.

Based on Rovers v Walsall being a staple League 1/ Division 3 game for me since the mid-60s. If you’re not of that vintage fair enough I wouldn’t expect you to understand. But don’t wonder why others who do know that think it.😉 Dont know the stats but I’d bet if you did them then Bristol Rovers v Walsall FC would be high up there as one of the most played fixtures. Thats why. UTG! edit: thanks playtowin for the stats. Supports Walsall being a staple League 1 side.
