And now we must ask ourselves, is the league table what Tisdale should really be studying?

You know what, I wouldn’t say even out of his depth, in fact, above his depth! BG and others before in league one have built teams on the flawed premise that superior skill can get you out of this league. It doesn’t. You need game management, strength, percentages. Mark Mcghee tried championship tactics with L2 players and look where it got him. He tried 3 at the back etc and it didn’t work. The squad as individuals are much better footballers all round. By footballer I mean keepy-uppy, able to pass triangles, tricks, ball delivery etc. Nobody has delivered set pieces for this side like Westbrooke has. Nobody had the speed and skill of Hanlan. We have a lump of a defender in Ehmer who probably has better ball skills than most of our previous midfields. What we also have is a disorganised rabble at the back, backing off, unable to close down. These are not “drilled” players. They are like Steiner school footballers - do what you like when you like, you’re above things like tackling. You cannot compete in league one this way. Garners fatal mistake was one not even Wenger made. He got rid of one of the most solid defensive set ups in league one, and instead of evolving the team, started again. It’s endemic of a lot of higher up football to think anyone with a big club pedigree is just better than those lower league grifters. I was infuriated to see pundits describing lambert for England as “fine if you want to lump it up to a big guy”. They obviously never saw him play, and just displayed the big club arrogance. BG has a bit of that, big club kids can beat seasoned league one pros? Guess again. Sad thing is, with say 3 proper, hard, disciplined players this could be a playoff team. We need to earn the right to play. We haven’t done that enough yet. Garner wasn’t out of his depth; he was still stuck 2 fathoms higher wondering why is FA badge ideas don’t work in this horrible, competitive league. Which I guess in itself is being out of your depth but in a different manner, he needed to swim down, not up!

What to expect from Oxford and what would you do? So far they have played 433 in majority of their league matches and also look a very settled side. The goals have been shared evenly Taylor 9 and Shodipo 6 in the league so far. Brannagan 2.4 Taylor 2.2 and Henry 2.0 take the most Shots per game Gas comparison: Nicholson 2.0 and Hanlan 1.9 Key passes per game for them is Forde 1.8 then Kelly and Henry on 1.3 Gas comparison: Westbrooke 2.0 & Josh Hare 1.4
Winning the ball back are Rodriquez 2.7 and Long 1.7 Tackles per game Gas comparison: Little 2.0, Harries 1.9, Grant 1.8, Tutonda 1.7 (only one of these now seem make the starting XI so Kilgour 1.5 and Baldwin 1.6) *Crying out for someone to tackle right? Clearances per game wise they have 3 defenders Atkinson 5.2, Moore 4.2 and Long 3.7 Gas comparison: Jack Baldwin 5.3, Cian Harries 5.2, Max Ehmer 4.3*Please note - League stats only + Strengths
Creating long shot opportunities - Very Strong Creating scoring chances - Strong - Weaknesses
Stopping opponents from creating chances - Weak Defending counter attacks - Weak Defending set pieces - Weak Avoiding fouling in dangerous areas - Weak Oxford's Style of Play
Attempt crosses often Play with width Aggressive So with Oxford unbeaten in 9 (all competitions) and with 5 wins on the bounce they certain would have gone into this game with momentum on their side. That however might not be the case as they haven't played a league match since the 5-1 mauling of Burton on 2nd Jan. Pretty sure they have been able to train so it wont exactly be like our MK Dons run out for them, but you would expect it to have some impact. They come up against us, pretty unsettled still and off the back of a real end to end match that we lost. Tis will have to do what he can to get us motivated and I'm sure that with all his experience that will be the case come Saturday. In his recent press conference, Sam and Ozzy are both back in training but he will want to make sure that they are fully fit to spare them and us from more agony on the sidelines and lets face it, we really could use their creativity. So what will we be doing formation and line up wise? Hey, your guess is as good as mine, but I felt that we was rather pleased with the attacking intent from us and 'the stats' show that we had 17 attempts. That being said at the end of the day we conceded 3 goals and looked wide open playing that 3 at the back so it is risky... especially with the likes of Taylor who, you would imagine would love to score against us. Before the signing of Williams I had expected the 3 at the back again from Tis, but now with a seasoned right back I think the back 4 might return. Being that I have no idea and Tis has a wonderfully unique way of picking the team... here goes nothing My Tis inspired line up 4-4-2 Diamond: . | . | Day [GK] | . | . | Williams [RB] | Kilgour [RCB] | . | Baldwin [LCB] | Leahy [LB] | . | . | Ehmer [DM] | . | | . | Westrbooke [CM] | . | McCormick [CM] | . | . | . | Oztumer [AM] | . | . | . | Hanlan [CF] | . | Nicholson [SS] | . |
And totally different if Ozzy and Nicholson are still unavailable 4-2-3-1:
. | . | . | Day [GK] | . | . | . | Williams [RB] | . | Kilgour [RCB] | . | Baldwin [LCB] | . | Leahy [LB] | . | . | Ehmer [DM] | . | Ogogo[DM] | . | . | . | McCormick [CM] | . | . | . | Barrett [CM] | . | . | . | . | Westrbooke [AM] | . | . | . | . | . | . | Hanlan [CF] | . | . | . |
So my biggest 'Tis thought' was... Ehmer as DM... he seems pretty comfortable on the ball, can pass as well as the other Defensive Mids and would be better in the air and one assumes tackling
Prediction 2-2
What do you think? What would you do?

We've got to be careful here. Tis knew what he was taking on when he took over the role, if we end up going down then he will need to take culpability too. Nobody put a gun to his head. I don't think we will go down but I am concerned as we seemed to peak vs Wimbledon and gone backwards since. There are various reasons to explain this which I'm holding on to at the moment (isolation, injuries etc). I really hope Nicholson and Ozzy are back tomorrow, would give us a massive boost.

Agree, we really need those 2 back. I think that the copvid outbreak came at the worst possible time, after the Wimbledon and plymouth results it felt like we were turning a corner and confidence was growing, the break just lost all that momentum

What do you think? What would you do? I think I said this on a thread the other day of formations and what we need to do is to stop experimenting with players out of position or out of a zone to which they have been drilled/trained/have grown as players. Ehmer is a CH by trade, thats where he needs to play. He wont be quick enough to handle the midfield and you also want someone with a good short passing range. If you look at his skill set, essentially he a head it, kick it battling defender, thats how he has earned his crust at every club he has been at, and was one of the best defenders in L1 doing that last year. We have 3 CDMs at the club all capable of that position, so why do we need to make Ehmer an experiment just to keep him in the side when Baldwin has been the biggest weakness at CH? Its illogical. Also if you play Ogogo and Ehmer together, you have nothing creative in the middle as you are pushing Wesbrooke and Barrett wider and they arent wingers.

I also agree with this about Ehmer, he needs to be a CH that is what he is and needs to have the same role as what he had at Gillingham. He did a good job in his first game at right back but then after that got found out by teams and when he went forward he couldn't get back quick enough I also don't see a place for Baldwin in this team imo. Too, too many mistakes As we seen from GC you need to have a settled and consistent defence not chop and change every time

Assuming no Nicholson or Ozzy & with Tis not wanting to start Hanlan-Ayunga together in case one gets injured, I’d go:
____________Day Williams_Kilgour__Ehmer_Leahy ____Grant__Ogogo__Westbrooke ___McCormick___Barrett ___________Hanlan
Or if we go with a 3 again:
____________Day ___Ehmer__Kilgour__Harries Williams_Ogogo__Zain_Leahy ____McCormick___Barrett ___________Hanlan

The person who said we peaked against Wimbledon lets be fair we havent been able to play that side and have been totally short of attackers since.Personally if Oz and Nicholson were available I would go for
Day
Williams Ehmer Grant Leahy or Kilgour
Ogogo
McCormick Westbrooke
Nicholson Oztumer
Hanlan
