Based on very little I think the starting XI for the first game at Mansfield will look something like:
__________Jaakkola ___Kilgour__Hughes__Anderton New___Coutts____Finley___New _______Collins___Westbrooke ____________New

Does anyone have an update on Nicholson’s injury? A little while ago it was claimed that he’d miss potentially the first few games of the season whilst he recovers from his op, is this still going to be the case?

Here we go then lads! Almost there. 4-2-3-1 —————————-Annsi———————— ?? —————Kilgour————Hughes——Anderton ——————-Coutts—————Grant—————— ——-Collins—————Finley—————Nicholson— —————— ————Saunders——————————- In all fairness in Annsi, Coutts and Nicholson we have 3 of the best players in L2 who would walk into every other side at this level and maybe a few others would be there also. Just as a base that's a pretty good one to start from even if Joey only signed one of them. I would also add Westbrook into that if his mind is right.Tbf I think he will be moved onto a L1 club before the season begins.

Might also see Grant where you’ve got Finley and Finley where you have Westbrooke. If Barrett proves his fitness then he could be the other wide spot or switch with Collins. Agree we need a journeyman striker in the building to help the development of Saunders, Hanlan, Ayunga, Phillips and Hulbert, but a strong showing by any one of those five in the preseason fixtures could get them the nod over this new arrival. Then a month or so after the season starts Nicholson should be returning to fitness and improve our options further. National League and below can take players on loan at any time so we don’t have to rush in determining which of our youngsters isn’t going to be knocking on the door of first team selection and would benefit from a stint out on loan.

I think Nicholson instead of Westbrook IMO Collins has been brought in, in case either or both are sold/move before deadline day……..

Agree with all of this bar Barrett. Can only see him (if anywhere) in a forward role, not in a responsible wing back area. As per a previous poster, would be good to see how Sammy’s rehab is going, I saw him on social media running on grass this week so that’s a positive. If it’s a month of strengthening and a month of fitness maybe September could be realistic, god knows. Yesterday’s signings tell me that Billy Bob won’t be coming home which is a real shame for me. And JC going to Newport, would’ve had him back in a heartbeat. I just feel we need someone in the squad who really knows what it means to be part of the club - Alfie aside but he wasn’t around the first team in the hazy DC days.

Well of course the ex-Gas we know really understands us and instantly benefits the dressing room and fan to players rapport is Harrison, last I heard was Pompey were considering allowing him to go to Oxford but having failed in a bid to land stockley they were inclined to hold on to him despite him and Marquis not gelling as a pairing. I understand what you say about Barrett, I just remember a lot of those Reading clips had him pinging in decent crosses from out wide, but you’re right his highlights reels are not filled with evidence of tracking back and well timed tackling.

I’d have Ellis back aswell as our number 9. Great character aswell but can’t see him coming down to us.

I’d like to go on record and say I have no idea about any of our new signings other than a friend commented that Coutts was good when he played for Sheff Utd in the Championship a few years ago. That’s it…the sum total of what I know about our new look squad. A clean slate for all and I hope they are all brilliant and bring success!

This seems to be the squad so far - I’ve left out those who are on the very fringe of the squad like Jones, Hoole and Hulbert, albeit they could play a part if they impress in pre season. Those in italics are in my opinion most likely to move on, either permanently or on loan. Could well have a lot of player movement still to come.
Goalkeepers Jaakkola Ward
Right Backs
Left Backs Anderton Clarke
Centre Backs Hughes Taylor (loan) Kilgour Martinez Baldwin Harries
Centre Midfield Coutts Grant Finley Thomas (loan) Spence (loan) Westbrooke Barrett Mehew Tomlinson Hargreaves Liddle
Left midfield/wing Nicholson Walker
Right midfield/wing Anderson Rodman
Forwards Collins Saunders Hanlan Ayunga

Darren Anderton is too old - AnderSON is the name you are looking for.
Copy and paste isn't always your friend!

I can see the left CF positioning being changed/added to with Barrett being transferred, we know Nicholson will miss the first 6 weeks of the season and Tomlinson will probably go out on loan. Maybe Hanlan will go there (more his natural position IMO) and then adding more of a target man.

Seriously though I think last pre season showed how easy it is to get carried away with signings that we basically know little of. You can only garner (pun intended) an accurate opinion of a player from watching them perform over time I think. So let’s see what happens. Looking forward to it now I have to say .
