A good point well made. As someone who reads and occasionally uses both this and the Alternative Forum, I'd like to add I find the piety and attitude on this forum towards the members of the other forum pretty vile. In fairness, I’ve seen comments made from members of the other forum directed to this forum that have been just as insulting. Never understood why there has to be a rivalry to be honest, we’re all just Gasheads. Condescending in the extreme , they are The Times we are The Sun .that is their mindset

I get the feeling it is more 'Telegraph vs Guardian' (both represented on both forums).

Well i contacted a director today, explaining to him about the disquiet amongst many of the fans over the Barton situation and that many supporters are suggesting that he is suspended until the court cases have been heard, and that about a third of supporters are considering not attending matches while JB is in the dugout, and is also awaiting the trials. The thing is there is no point coming on this thread argueing and moaning at each other that achieves nothing if fans have a grievance they need to let the club know. i went on to say we are a family club which tries to include women and children and our managers behaviour goes against the grain. There is no smoke with out fire and with J B criminal past and the fact that he is being prosecuted without the victims support it suggests that there is good evidence that he was violent. I have asked that the Bristol Rovers board do the right thing and try to repair the reputation of this club. If supporters have views they need to let the club know and not just air them with each other.

In a society where someone is innocent until proven guilty, unless all of the facts are known and substantiated (and remember, a number of previous allegations towards him were unproven or it turned out that the full stories were not reported) I’m not sure that the club can do anything as it would then be seen as the club delivering the verdict. If JB has done this - and what this actually is remains to be confirmed as fact - then he should be sacked, but until such time the club cannot be seen to influence proceedings etc and he has to stay in situ otherwise it opens the club up to all sorts of potential lawsuits… In my opinion, the club should be doing things now to promote support for abuse victims - male and female - and everything it can to promote the club as a safe environment for all people, irrespective of age, gender, ability, race etc etc

May well have provoked a response

How on earth do we know that about a third of supporters who regularly attend matches will not consider doing so? Fair play for making the effort to communicate with the club though.

Glad that you helped to galvanise the the club into a making a response to the fans - fingers crossed that we can eventually get back to focusing on the football.

Like axe I use both forums and I don’t think that the attitude of users here towards the other forum is any different to their attitude towards us. I often step in and call posters out over there out if they start taking the moral high ground. And to be honest they can think they’re a bit above us here because they consider themselves more reasoned and reflective (my words). Little difference imo, and as axe says “why” we’re all supporters of BRFC. Aren’t we? UTG!

The opposite seems to have occurred in the Ryan Giggs case, as that seems to get worse each time he appears at a court hearing. You suggest on the one hand that the club can't do anything, Barton wise, as they may prejudice the case but then go on to to suggest they should now promote support for abuse victims, surely that's also sending out a message that they have accepted Mrs B is an abuse victim? It's a total minefield for the club.

I’m not sure whether it is just me or whether others feel the same but having been an avid reader and occasional poster on this forum for years - it seems to me that it has / is becoming much more divisive and borderline aggressive… I’m not sure why it is - whether lockdown and the strain of the difficult environment we have been living in these last 18 odd months, coupled with the on field decline in our team has affected things or not; but every single thread seems to be so binary and just turns in to borderline aggressive arguments - there seems to be no empathy from anyone and I find it really sad how toxic this forum seems to be becoming. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all up for debate and good discussion but views seem to be so extreme these days that pretty much every thread seems to be such a depressing read… As a fan base our strength always was in how we could unite to support the club and team (even if we didn’t always agree amongst ourselves) and we were the true definition of faithful and true through all sorts of adversity we have faced. I’m not 100% sure these days though! The kit launch, Ayunga, new signings, #hergametoo and Cash, pre season friendly games, the quarters, Joey Barton, Widdrington, Covid restrictions at the ground, the shop not being open, pretty much any communication that’s currently being released etc - everything seems to be criticised and pretty strongly non stop. Now don’t get me wrong, when it comes to JB he is a marmite character and he has ‘history’ that influences people’s opinions and views - I get that. What I find disappointing is that without knowing facts or even any of the story, people take a sensationalist headline and immediately demand he is sacked. Now I am in no way condoning anything and I am firmly of the opinion that if found guilty then he should be sacked for misconduct and bringing the reputation of Bristol Rovers into disrepute. However, learning from the Caroline Flack incident which the CPS progressed and sadly caused her suicide, and it was later proven that what was reported was grossly exaggerated and unsupportable - I do believe that a person should be treated as innocent until proven guilty. However, I can understand other peoples views and whilst I may not wholly agree with them, I’m not one who has a given right to say their view is any more or less valid than mine - I think we can agree to hold different views and leave it at that rather than trying to argue one view is right and the other wrong. On other things, I just don’t get why we appear to be so binary and divisive. I used to believe that this forum was the most balanced between here and the other one but these days I don’t believe it is. I have toyed with deleting my profile on here and coming off of the forum completely but I know that within a week or so I’ll end up just wanting to rejoin and I’ll only end up continuing to read it all anyway as a ‘guest’… So all I can do is politely ask that we take a step back and look at ourselves individually and learn to and show more respect to each other and look to discuss and debate with a level of empathy? It’ll make this place better and more fun again. It will also hopefully make the mods lives on here easier as I’m pretty certain some of the stuff on here has gone pretty close to the time out or ban lines! Thanks ! Trouble is everyone thinks there right. You don’t agree you get shot down (I.e covid thread) No ones right because we all get fed ballocks. We all support Rovers. We the minority of the fan base have F##k all better to do than post our own $hitty views, moan about everything because that is what a forum seems to be for. Over exaggerate everything to the point that people are (not me, I see this place as a non serious source of a lot, some good posters, some absolute 🔔 ends, let you lot decide that) getting over exasperated and quite literally throw the towel in because someone don’t agree. Let’s just support the Chuffing team at the start of a new season. Grow up idiots.

You suggest on the one hand that the club can't do anything, Barton wise, as they may prejudice the case but then go on to to suggest they should now promote support for abuse victims, surely that's also sending out a message that they have accepted Mrs B is an abuse victim? It's a total minefield for the club. My understanding (and I may be wrong) was that it was alleged and reported in the press that she hit him with a lamp whilst he slept but the reality was that it was actually his mobile phone she threw at him ….. the reason the lamp was smashed was because in her anger she tipped over the table with the lamp on it and the police were called due to noise and shouting as in her anger she was breaking things (pictures and stuff)…. It was neighbours I thought who called police. The press reported blood stained bedding which he denied and it was later found the blood was planted on the doorstep (it was tested and wasn’t hers or his) to create sensationalist pictures…. That’s what I thought came out from the inquest which was also critical of CPS… I agree that it’s a minefield and my rationale for supporting campaigns is that in a situation where a lot of negative publicity is being put towards the club, the should be trying to counter or mitigate that but without it giving a message of non support for JB… also personally I think they are great causes - especially where incidents are on the rise driven by COVID lockdowns and emotional strain that has put on relationships…

Thanks Topper, that was the Prosecutor who had decided to pursue the case and his defence of why he did…. In the inquest elements of Caroline’s admissions to the police were raised and she admitted to them that she hit him with his phone and also was trying to slit her wrists… www.walesonline.co.uk/lifestyle/showbiz/caroline-flack-inquest-lewis-burton-18725581Not sure exactly what is / isn’t the truth and that’s my nervousness about some of the reactions on here re JB…. Without knowing exactly what’s happened and the truth I just think we need to be cautious and careful…

Whether she attacked him with a phone or a bedside lamp she still left him with a laceration on his head, I'm not sure you could say the story was grossly exaggerated, although the press were just reporting what the CPS were suggesting in any event.
