I’m just putting the idea out that being at home makes a difference. If, and it’s just if, we had been at home today we might have won. Then next week’s away game would have been that bit easier. I’m not claiming it would be earth shattering but being at home usually helps and that gives us a confident start rather than having to pick ourselves up from a defeat. Over the season we play every other team in the league home and away. The order in which we play our first couple of games makes so little difference. If anything, the fact that our last game of the season is at home could be more important than the first being away. So you don't think Mansfield will have got a boost from winning today? Last season got off to a poor start from which we never seemed to recover.

I seem to recall not being much better in the opening day home games in recent years Grimsby 0-0 and Northampton 0-1 (the tool), but it would be nice to open the season at home again one day.

Pretty sure this goes beyond the EFL. Fixtures are given to clubs a couple of weeks before going public. Clubs then sort out clashes etc and no doubt the police have some say. The police won’t deal with City home on the day of the balloon fiesta.

They dont have to play at home on the day of the balloon fiesta, they could play on the Friday night as the balloons have taken to be on the downs on a Friday or they could play on the Tuesday night, after the fiesta finishes.

That is very unlikely for the first game or two of the season, unless Sky want it...

Who knows? We’re not privy to discussions between 2 clubs, EFL and police. I agree though that we should get our fair share of home games on day 1. Mind you, how often do we get Boxing Day or New Year? Maybe that’s the compensation in negotiations.

Exactly. Why should we be punished virtually every season? Every other season City should have to play on the Tuesday if the Police won’t allow them to play on the Saturday.

In League 2 yesterday 9 teams won their game. 7 were at home. It would appear there is an advantage - at this level. All of those teams have a confidence boost and the losers feel that extra pressure.

It’s not like playing away results in an automatic loss either. It does when we are playing!

Is it time that the club should challenge EFL with always having an away game first? Seems to me that our chances of getting a winning start to a season is always diminished. No other club in the EFL has this restriction, and hinders Rovers getting a good start. Yes, I think you are right. The EFL bureaucrats sit in their offices earnestly plotting the club's downfall.

It's clearly the Bristol Balloon Festival organisers not the EFL where the problem lies, why can't they alternate dates each year?

Last ten opening games for Rovers in the Football League season (not counting the conference season or this one)
P10 W1 D1 L8 F7 A19 Pts 4 - 2/10 opening league games were at home.
Interesting stat though, in the return fixtures against those teams later in those seasons
P10 W4 D5 L1 F15 A11 Pts 17 - 8/10 of those therefore at home....
....obviously there changes throughout those seasons at both our club and our opponents, but that's quite a difference between home and away records against the 'same' teams. And I am firmly in the camp that a good start/momentum is really important....

Absolutely. Almost every season your home record will be better than the away games. Psychologically it's important to win the first game and hit the ground running. Double whammy is that the Fiesta can also take paying fans away from our gate on that weekend. It could be worse, poor Crawley had to travel to Hartlepool yesterday
