I know it was not considered an important game yesterday BUT it could prove to be the most important game of the season if lessons are learnt from it. The following was clear to me. A) Certain Players not good enough. This game for me should have been a VERY important game for fringe players who were "given a game" and for players who have been playing but have not really cemented their place in the team. Very few of them came through the game with any credit and IMO it proved that 1) Clarke's decision to continually play Lockyer over Leadbitter is correct. defensively Leadbitter is very poor and that should be the first priority for a right back. 2) Wall, Martin, Gosling, Goldberg, Leadbitter and Clarke are not good enough. The loan players there should be returned to their clubs and the permanent players there be only "squad" players or loaned out in January. B) The way the team play 1) Clarke needs to look at the fact that too much of the time the ball is with our back four, none of whom are confident at passing the ball. 2) Clarke seriously needs to look at the Goalscoring problem from not only the personnel but also the way the team play. We were told that Taylor was a "play off the shoulder of the last defender" but that couldn't be further from the truth- his only good work is OUTSIDE of the penalty area and down the line. Wingers are there for a reason and that should be to get down the line and whip in crosses, not to pass the ball back for the full backs to put crosses in every time which is what happened. The front two should work as a team to close and hassle defenders whereas it seems to me that Blissett has to do it all himself and like Harrold and Beardsley last season waste most of their energy doing that. Finally centre midfield is not good enough and needs strengthening just as much and probably more than the strikers. 3) Tinkering - Clarke seems to have it in his head that the players are good enough to keep switching formation and positions. Believe me Daryl they are NOT!!! 4) Corners- Bath showed the dangerous nature of the inswinging corner- something we rarely see and their crossing overall was good compared to ours. This surely should be rectified at training? C) For those who criticise Mildenhall perhaps they will realise now that he is much better than some make out and will be badly missed. To be honest I think we will see a great improvement on Friday with a full strength team but if there was something that needed proving then yesterday did it- It only takes a couple of key players to be missing and we look a very ordinary Conference team with too many average players and I say to Daryl- Keep your tinkering to January when you need to wheel and deal and freshen up the squad with both ins and outs. He's just an alright keeper for the money he is on and has not looked as commanding as his loan spell with us. Goldberg only played 17 minutes yesterday didn't he? I would still like to see more of him. Gosling is definitely not good enough, Martin is too hit and miss even at his best with us. Clarke's looked good about 1 game in 10, he's got passion but lacks quality. Leadbitter is too suspect defensively. Wall I haven't seen enough of.

Gosling & Clarke are only youngsters, so it's a bit early to write them off? Plus Clarke & Sinclair was always going to be lightweight in the middle.
Whilst Martin's hit & miss before discarding him DC needs to ensure he can get a replacement in, after all he's better than nothing!
Interesting Leadbitter's getting all the stick for the 2nd, as didn't the goalie ask for the pass back?
Not sure we can say Goldberg' s not good enough when he's hardly played alongside Blisset, given Taylor's continued lack of goals I'd be really tempted to start Goldberg, or Harrison, on Friday, or even both given our wingers create so little.

Agreed Goldberg should have been given more time,he has the predatory instincts of a good striker but he needs a decent run.Yesterday was a good chance to see what he got.

I don't think we can learn much from this game that we did not already know. I don't agree entirely with the critisism of fringe players as they were short of match practice although it was an oppertunity to stake a claim as Ellis did at Dorchester for all the good it done him. The main problem is that we cannot score when we are on top and we cannot turn pressure into goals. Bath probably had a game plan to frustrate rovers and our fans and turn the atmosphere against the home team and if so it worked a treat. The problem pure and simple is lack of goals and DC has yet to find a solution.

This might be the kick up the pants some of our players need. You cannot just turn up and expect to win a game. At least it was not a league game.

Thanks for the writr up Steve. It does have a touch of "Roadman" about it though - you only told us a few weeks ago we had the best squad in the division. I'm not saying I disagree with you, just that it can be a difficult to grasp when the squad go from world beaters to bang average within a few weeks.

Obviously, yesterday was a bad day at the office, but the performance (I guess) was probably similar to many Home and Away this season ??
To me the way we start pretty much every game is a key factor - our tempo and intensity are not there - often it looks like a friendly game !
Also, as Steve mentioned the back four and their passing, but I would also add the keeper here. Our keeper/Mildenhall can dictate a lot if they move the ball quicker - short and long throws, for example.
I think DC plays it too safe - we give the opposition nothing to worry about in the first half especially. DC needs to say get your arses /sharpness up from the first whistle and demand a quick tempo using the full width of the pitch - we probably have the best playing surface in the division BUT sadly rarely utilise this.
As regards players - to make us more of an attacking threat we badly need an athletic right back and natural right winger that can give us more thrust down this side of the pitch. He needs to stick to two centre forwards before Jan window - if they don't get him 5/6 goals in these next 4 games - someone else has to come in. For me Blisset and Taylor should have those 4 games.
Oh and do a lot of praying and beering too !

I do not wish to see that useless waste of space in the famous blue and white quarters again.

That's what this forum should be about Tbone ! Not any name calling or putting people down ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I get what you mean about Taylor by the way - who doesn't - he's missed some great chances - but sadly BRFC doesn't seem to have any one else to take his place ![:|](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/plain.png) . Taylor is worth persevering with but his place should be on the bench until his finishing gets a lot more consistent.

He is not a finisher. He is a bloke that runs around. We can drag people out of the stand that can run around. He does not deserve a place in the squad, just because he runs around. Quite simply he does not do what he is payed to do. And should be offloaded to a team on the Downs.

As much as I've defended Taylor, when he decided to go into a slide to get to the ball when he was one-on-one with the keeper in the second half, I could've slapped him.

Yesterday proved how important Lee Mansell is to us & somehow we need to find another gem like Della-Verde who can unlock defences.
