Got done by 2 corners if memory serves me right and Carl Heggs had a stormer. Fair enough though as the 2 highest placed teams went into the final. Disliked them ever since nonetheless..

My memory is not great but i do not recall Hayles missing a pen, remember him hitting the post which would have put us four up. I was there (at the home leg) - don't remember much except that their "consolation" away goal was a real concern. Singing "Que Será, Será" was definitely premature. Apparently Nick Day announced on the tannoy immediately after the game something about Wembley tickets and that was used as motivation by the Northampton manager to get his team up for it against us. I think I also heard on some podcast that we had quite a young squad in the 2nd leg and they were being intimidated in the tunnel (balls thrown against them etc). I definitely remember hearing on the radio that the pitch had been watered down into a bog. But I still couldn't quite believe we lost 3-0.. I really thought we would get that crucial away goal at some point Penny, Pritch, Beadle, Hayles, Bennett, Foster as well I think? Like to think none of them were getting bullied in the tunnel!

Sure it was Tilson had the ball bounced off his head.

The tie swung in their favour in the first leg at the Mem, Bazzer missed a penalty which would have made it 4-0, that lifted Saints tails and they had a further boost by getting a late goal which in context of that one game they did not deserve. Atkins used that and the change in the momentum in that first game to get them really motivated for the second leg and lets face it they blitzed us in that game a deserved to go through I think the key was Atkinson watering the hell out of the pitch for hours before kick off (in the days when watering was hardly done on Match day). It had been a lovely weather week and our squad only took their small stud boots, the pitch was made boggy, they wore long studs and the truth is we could hardly stand up, Barry Hayles had no chance to shine, and Atkinson plan delivered. The writing was on the wall before a ball was kicked 🙁 I cried. Wow, I didn't know any of that - gutted! (his name was Atkins though as in Ian Atkins not Atkinson)

But yes the rest is as I remember it, Holloway was fuming but resigned to the fact Northamptons plan had worked. I was there pitchside in the crowd and had lots of friends on the grassy hill too.
