Sad news. He managed one of the best Rovers teams I ever had the privilege to watch. Large crowds at Eastville and amazing away support in the 73/74 promotion season.
RIP Don and thanks for the memories.

www.thestar.co.uk/sport/football/sheffield-wednesday/sheffield-wednesday-mourn-true-owls-legend-as-former-captain-don-megson-passes-away-4066952A true Rovers legend. That team of 73/74 was a great team. I can recite it in my dreams so regular did he pick them. Must have been 6/7 with over 40 or near to appearances. He turned the potential we had after so many near-misses in getting promotion to Division 2 into a reality. Promotion was never really in doubt, apart from a wobble in March ‘74. It was only our second ever promotion. I can just about remember our promotion team last season but that team of 73/74 I never forget. Some of the best football days in that season, the opening day 3-0 win at AFCB, when we could have been 2-0 down at half time, the 8-2 win at Brighton and the draw at Southend to clinch promotion. Great days. I guess tbh the football wasn’t as exciting as under Bill Dodgin but he got results with a much stronger defence. And of course when we got to Division 2 the board never truly backed him and he was always having to make the best of what he had. RIP Don, there are enough of us left to know how good you were and what memories you gave us. UTG!

R.I.P DON a true Rovers Managerial legend. What a season he gave us! long unbeaten run at start of season 26/7 games or so , only defeat being 4-3 at Forest in cup, before losing controversially at Wrexham. Well remember him playing for Weds in cup final, did he not break his leg? Not sure what happened when he left us , thanks for the wonderful memories Don , R.I.P SIR, condolences to family!

Reading reports on the Sheffield Wednesday fans forum that Don Megson has passed away. A true Rovers great manager. That 73/74 season was a classic. RIP Sir. My all time hero. Has to be said the nucleus of his team was Bill Dodgins work but with the flair of Warboys, Banniaster, Stephens, Dobson and even Rudge. The team that i grew up with. The team who win the Watney cup. Rest in piece Don, you will never be forgetting at my house. Still have my silk scarf from 73/74. Would not part with that

Met Don a few times a real gentleman and football expert at tactics and brought professionalism to Rovers his early success was winning the Watney Cup within weeks of his appointment in July 1972. However his team building of the 1973-74 season a team hardly ever beaten was extraordinary and promotion to old Second Division now Championship was remarkable.
He could spot a player develop him and sell on Alan Warboys and Bruce Bannister are two examples of improving third division players to Second Division players. RIP Don
