I’m not sure if this has been mentioned on the forum before as I’ve only been back on 2 months, sorry if it has. Aldershot sat in the play offs in the National League, only just stayed up last season with Tommy Widdrington coming in to keep them up. The head of player recruitment at Aldershot is a proper Gashead, explained all in the the following link Him and Tommy are obviously doing something right, good to see a Gashead doing well in the game utilising an average non league budget. This isn’t me being a recruitment agent for Jamie, never spoke to him before, if anyone of his family or friends are reading, would love to hear your views. I was tipped off on a player a couple of weeks ago but a football club programme editor and he mentioned “one of your lot works” works for them, again sorry if it’s been mentioned on here before. 👏 His brother was also runner up on junior bake off! Their parents must be doing something right! www.wfla.com/daytime/ultimate-oreo-blondies-with-the-great-british-junior-bake-off-finalist-robbie-hedges/

Pirate, how many players have you recommended and people taken you up on them and any gone onto better things?

Pirate, how many players have you recommended and people taken you up on them and any gone onto better things? Back in the day I tipped off various people at the club about several players that went onto better things, sadly it wasn't at Rovers. You might remember me banging on about Charlie Austin at Poole Town all those years ago on the old forum. The forumer 'padstowgas' passed his name on to the management at the time for me, but they weren't interested. A few months later he was scoring against us for Swindon and then not long after sold for millions and the rest is history. Quite a few similar ones over the years have been recommended to people in positions of authority at the club... Jamie Vardy (at Stocksbridge Park Steels and Halifax), Che Adams (at Ilkeston), Rhys Healey (at Connahs Quay Nomads), Aden Flint (at Alfreton Town), Dwight Gayle (at Stansted), Jarrod Bowen (at Hereford), Lee Gregory (at Halifax), Joe Lolley (at Kidderminster), Duncan Whatmore (at Altrincham), Albert Adomah (at Harrow Borough), Erhun Oztumer (at Dulwich Hamlet), Lee Tomlin (at Rushden & Diamonds), Conor Washington (at St Ives Town), Marc Roberts (at Wakefield), Sean Raggett (at Sittingbourne on loan), Kieffer Moore (at Truro & Dorchester), Mark Sykes (at Glenavon), Gavin Whyte (at Crusaders). Other than the few lads I've tipped off Jamie about at Aldershot, I've tipped off our former employee Enda Barron who now works at Ross County in the Scottish Prem as Head of Recruitment about a few players recently in non-league and he ended up signing George Harmon from Oxford City in the National League South and Max Sheaf from Redditch Utd in the Southern League Premier Central. A few others mentioned on this forum that recently stepped up several levels or moved were Nico Lawrence (stepped up 8 levels to join Southampton), Brody Peart (stepped up 7 levels to join Brighton), Sammy Henia-Kamau (stepped up 7 levels to join Swansea), Tobias Braney (stepped up 5 levels to join Luton), Josh Stones (stepped up 4 levels to join Wigan), Joe Adams (stepped up 6 leveks to join Wigan), Christie Ward (stepped up 6 levels to join Wycombe), Harry Bridle (stepped up 5 levels to join Gillingham), Jokubas Mazionis (stepped up 7 levels to join Ipswich), Ollie Tanner (stepped up 5 levels to join Cardiff), Harry Williams (stepped up 3 levels to join Walsall), Patrick Kelly (Coleraine to West Ham), Mark O’Mahony (Cork City to Brighton), Andy Lyons (Shamrock Rovers to Blackpool), Danny Mandroiu (Shamrock Rovers to Lincoln City), Phoenix Patterson (Waterford to Fleetwood). Plenty more that have slipped my mind.

He's doing a great job there. Sad that he was ever allowed to leave the football club, especially in that manner. It's quite interesting as Tommy Widdrington was also run out of town and seems to be doing well elsewhere. Whatever went wrong under Garner (Maybe it was Garner all along) Widdrington has shone at Aldershot. I think I remember people questioning why he would leave Kings Lyn at the top of the table, to manage Aldershot at the bottom of the next league up. Oh and Nans up and down the country thinks his son is lovely. 😍 Perhaps managing in the national league is different to managing in league 1. The clique of players he knows are good for the Nat league but no good in league 1. Tommy came out in that season, after his recruitment got 2 managers fired at great expense to the club and said “the players are good enough” Max Ehmer. Jack Baldwin. Main goal threat Brandon Hanlan. Zain Westbrook as midfield general. Harries. Good enough? Were they fk.

Interesting Barrett is quoted above in a tweet and of course Aldershot want him but I know Peterborough, Lincoln and Cambridge keeping an eye on him as well.
If he got his head and fitness right he’d be the best player in the Rovers squad today. Some will say that’s a statement, Tisdale and Barton both played him as soon as they came in. Best player in training, all the managers said it, broke Rooney’s youth record at Reading for goals, look at his debut at Plymouth in the Coca Cola Cup scoring 2 goals at Home Park.
I hope Tommy and Jamie can get this lad playing again, he should be earning a wage in professional football, reminds me of Ollie Norburn who went non league to get his head and life right.

But those players like Ehmer, Hanlan etc won at the likes of Lincoln earlier in the season and even after Tisdale’s doctoring which was a disaster, still were 4 points above the relegation trap door when Barton came in? Love your reply Pirate, brilliant mate. Interesting you mention Sykes and Whyte over in Ireland, Oxford have some contacts over there as did Cogs with Liam Scales. Personally I don’t mind Tommy, I hope he does well at Aldershot, he earned his money the season DC was sacked and when him and Cogs raided Coventry, his ex employer. Good to see Jordi Van ShotStopper back playing over here, he was another player that You Tube can make look good, seemed a good lad but well off league standard keeping.

We were very positive about the recruitment that Summer ‘20. Unfortunately we stopped recruiting after we did defence and midfield and seriously missed strikers. This screwed up everything and left an unbalanced squad. Hanlan was never a CF but was often played there. And, tbf when TW was managing the team he did get them to play. Istr the win v Pompey and other matches. Highlights that season being that match, Lincoln away and the 0-0 draw at Posh, the first point there for some time when the defence and esp Baldwin played very well. Anyway, all water under the bridge now and TW has done well where he’s been though it’s a few levels below what we are now. Good luck to him. UTG! UTG!

In my opinion Tommy was a victim of the sacking culture we had back then. I know him and Cogs had tensions but they got to job done. Regardless of Ehmer, all of them, Garner and a window, a proper apppointment after him (Tis never done a relegation battle and look at his effort at Stevenage) that squad would have easily stayed up with someone like Cotterill. It is what it is, Barton ridiculed Widdrington publicly in the media, that added to the laughing at him. I hold nothing against Tommy as I said above, him, Martyn Starnes, Mansell, club Secretary, physio, all part of the old crew shipped out, Sargent major paintball expert added to the board, we know all about it don’t we! The Kuwaitis have said this will never happen again, amen. I imagine Jamie is loyal to Tommy for the chance, what a story it would be if he returned to the Gas one day, one caveat, he must be able to do 10 keep up now 😂👍

Wanted to sign the striker Pigott who was available at the time and he went on to score 20 goals that season. gaschat.co.uk/post/792037Garner also desperately wanted the midfielder Ebou Adams (who was scouted and recommended by Jamie).

Does that mean we were wrong in sacking Garner? What kind of a stupid question is that? Well, you are saying the players weren't good enough. So with better players, Garner would have been successful?

I was confused because you said part time fans, I have a season ticket and probably do two thirds of our away games. Maybe you should have said part time forum posters 🤷🏼♂️ I’ve said before, I got a tip off the the new owners were reading the forum every day, I returned to help them see what Barton was. But I’ve liked being back on here, some good banter and conversations.
