Hi Mr England, i couldn't have wished for a better referee, real top ref in my opinion - efficient, fair and superb decision maker. All round top guy. Hope you enjoy the game. I'm with you tumshie. Don't get me wrong, I've been the first to complain loudly about water poor refereeing performances, and Swabey hit new depths on Wednesday. However, I have a growing realisation that getting on the refs back is counterproductive. I know a few refs, one who is at a reasonably high level. They are all decent guys, but there is one common characteristic - they are all stubborn as mules and will not accept that they have got ANYTHING wrong, in life as well as on the field of play. 10,000 telling the ref that he is a wonker, we've got another sh** ref, etc will not positively affect this personality type - in fact it will only harden attitudes. By all means we should appeal loudly and applaud without implied sarcasm the decisions that they get right. Even throw in the odd well done ref when he gets an obvious throw in decision against us right. We can always curse when the final whistle blows. Have a good one Mr England.

How do you become a football league referee? Do you have to pass x amount of test? There are (I think) 13 levels of Referee in England (although one of these are inactive referreeing mentors. There is a basic refereeing course that gets you started and then promotion through the levels is based on assessment each season. Further courses and qualifications have to be taken up the structure. Te Select Group of professional referees are the pinacle and would ref Premier League and International games. Level 1 is the National List, who referee Football League games Level 2a (Panel List) referee Conference, Conference North and South and can be chosen as assistants at Football League and FA Cup games. I think the Assistants for this years FA cup final come from this list. Finally, there is a further qualification for Level 2a..... .........full common sense removal.

They go through all that when it would just be cheaper to have Tv play back!
Thanks for the info though.

If we didn't already know, just an indication of what the lads and Mr England will have to put up with on Sunday:

Bring them down to our level like second half on Wed and then duff them up!"

To become a Football League Referee you need to firstly take an eye test and if you pass it you cannot become a referee.

TBF that's the only chance they've got, unless the miracle worker Pennock can ignore 10 years with Pulis and suddenly recognise a skillful player when he has one. They play ugly percentage football, and sometimes it works. We've just got to try to deal with it, whilst also trying to play our game and being creative up top. One person on their forum also mentioned the wind and rain helping them on Sunday. F me, that is desperate.

Am I the only one thinking that apart from missing the elbow into the back of Taylor in the first half that the ref was having a decent game up until about the 70th minute then the last half hour he lost his head

Perhaps the pressure on him all got a bit too much? What's worrying is how the Wembley ref will cope, should we get there and have to face the Eastleigh cheats?
