Lines transfer will drag out because PV obviously want a fee and we don't want to pay one. So for now PV are stuck with paying over £2k per week on a player they don't really want, and more importantly can't afford.
So it's a case of who blinks first. Whatever happens, PV will brag how they got what they wanted. Look how quick they were to tell the media we were paying his full salary whilst here.

Newport have sign John-Lewis from Grimsby I did not see this one coming! More below. Terry Butcher announces first three County signingsFirst published 17 minutes ago in Newport County Last updated 3 minutes ago NEWPORT County AFC manager Terry Butcher has revealed his first three signings as he begins rebuilding his squad at Rodney Parade. Goalkeeper Rhys Taylor and defender Scott Barrow have both signed from Macclesfield Town on one-year deals while former Grimsby Town striker Lenell John-Lewis has agreed to join the Exiles on a two-year contract following the Mariners Conference play-off final defeat to Bristol Rovers. The new arrivals mean Butcher now has seven senior players signed up for the 2015/16 campaign following the 15 departures from last season's squad. "All three players have been excited by our plans, and about the type of players we are planning to bring in," said the Exiles boss. "Rhys played every game for Macclesfield last season, and was instrumental for them throughout the season. "They just missed out on play offs but he put in some very good performances. "He's a former Welsh international so we know we now have two quality 'keepers with Joe Day already here. "There should be a really good contest between the two for the number one position." Talking to the official County website, Butcher said that, whenever finances have allowed at a football club, his ideal is always to have two strong 'keepers as opposed to a younger back-up stopper. "I always want excellent competition and camaraderie between the keepers," he said. "It means the keepers need to be on their toes all the time, they need to stay on their game all season, I have the feeling it will be a fascinating contest between the pair." Butcher added: "Scott and Rhys are good pals, they played together at Macclesfield last year, so that's immediately a plus point. "Scott is a very good defender who is comfortable on the ball. He's got a sweet left foot and scored a couple of great goals last season. He's a hard working lad who just wants to play." The third signing of the day is Lenell John-Lewis who caught Butcher's eye after scoring 18 goals for Grimsby Town last season, including a play-off final goal at Wembley. "I watched Lenell play in the final, where he scored the opening goal early on for Grimsby," he explained. "He's a player who has been impressive all season, he's scored a good number of goals and has great energy levels. "He works hard, is strong on the ball and can lead the line well. He gets goals and that's what we're after, he gets goals and makes goals for other players, I'm really excited by him. "Lenell knows what the League is about having played with Bury recently. He's signed a two-year deal so we're looking for him to really make his mark this year and next year." Butcher added that talks are progressing to an advanced stage with a couple more players, and he hopes to make announcements on their signing by the middle of next week. www.southwalesargus.co.uk/sport/football/newportcounty/12979555._/

Unless Newport are suddenly paying daft wages surely that knocks on the head the notion we can't sign good players as the won't move to this part of the country?

Free transfer too. Grimsby fans are going to be . a lot of players in non-lge seem to be on 1 year contracts. seems to the way they roll in non-lge. The upside = can change squad easily. the downside = best players can often leave for free. The previous season Akinde and Moult both left smaller clubs, after only 1 yr, for bigger clubs.

TBH i think we just have to have a salary in mind and stick to it. Have to play serious hardball on this. If they can't afford him or don't want him then they need to reduce their expectations. People bandy '£2k a week' around like it's sweeties in a shop. it is £1OOk a year! That is as much as a Council chief exec gets and he/she will be responsible for a major public institution, and several thousand of staff. Personally I think that any player in Lge 2 being paid £1OOk a year is in the wrong division. And any club who pays it has the wrong man in charge.

Remember him banging them in a few seasons ago in league 2. I'm finding it hard to keep up with stuff. maybe something has changed as earlier in the season PV had already told Pope he wouldn't be offered a new contract. I remember it clearly as it was big-ish news. I think it was simply wages. He was given a really fat contract to stop him leaving when he was banging them in. I suspect they assumed he wouldn't take a huge pay cut when contract finished so made it clear they won't attempt it.

even with this thread [thanks FinnishGas] I'm finding it hard to keep up with stuff.
But what I have noticed is that a lot of the best non-lge talent has been hoovered up by Lge 2 teams.
Lois Maynard, Rhys Taylor, Ben Tomlinson, Lenell John-Lewis, Matty pearson.
A lot of others have been re-signed by their own clubs or gone to other teams in the Conf.
Not a criticism or making any point. Just an observation. Non-lge players are often on 1 yr deals and you need to get in quick at the end of the season.
