For finding our manager and bringing him to the club. If what I've read is true Ward spoke to DC about the possibility of a friendly liked the determination and ambition of the man and decided there and then that he wanted him to be his assistant and the future manager of Bristol Rovers. Ward cocked up his last season at the club big time but thank god he got this one thing right. DC has been a breathe of fresh air at our club that was stagnant and in freefall. This squad will run through walls for their manager and I'm so proud of what Clarke has built in his short time as manager I'm proud of ALL of our players and I can't wait for our next game. UTG !!!

We don't really know the details surrounding how JW went upstairs and DC took over. I'm sure it will be interesting when it finally does come out*.
*In DC's third autobiography, probably.

Wardys head wasn't in the game.
His wife was ill and he really didn't want to be doing it no more.

He didn't dump anything on DC,Ward wanted to continue till the end of the season then let Dc take over, but the issue was forced on him

Wardys head wasn't in the game. His wife was ill and he really didn't want to be doing it no more. John,s wife is still not well but her condition has stabilised. It must have been terribly difficult for him to keep his mind on football when he had other worries.I know when my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer my head was in the shed and I couldn't concentrate on anything else.

I doubt they held a gun to his head to make him sign his contract? Although after the season we've just had to suffer I'm surprised somebody has started a thread thanking JW for anything!

DC did/does have the ability, thank god. Everyone's clearly got different opinions. For me personally, I'll always maintain that it wasn't Wards fault. The opportunity that Buckle was given: ''here's a complete fresh start, with a big big club for this level. Here's all the money - go and get the players you want for a team that will be entirely yours''... and look what happened. I'll always blame Paul Buckle for the gas going out of the league. UTG

Yep me too. JW let it slide because of understandable personal issues, but the board didn't do anything about it and let it slide too..out of the football league.

The board should have let Wardie go to deal with the personal stuff and either given DC the job earlier(risky at the time) or brought in an experienced manager, possibly as a DOF, short term while DC learnt the trade a bit more. Anyway it is all irrelevant now. In all situations in life, business, sport or whatever, you start from where you are now and build from that (but trying to learn from past mistakes)

Although after the season we've just had to suffer I'm surprised somebody has started a thread thanking JW for anything! My point was that although he cocked up his last season in charge he got ONE thing right. His decision to have DC as his assistant and the manager to take over the reigns once he left.

If Ward did not want the job which was perfectly understandable given the circumstances, DC should have been given the job from the start. Yes we would have all thought that Higgs needed to see a shrink but what did DC actually learn from Ward? How not to do it and how to bore the ass off us all? I think knowing what we now know about DC's capabilities, he would have bettered Ward and we probably would have avoided the drop.

Probably , maybe , who knows. I don't really care about that anymore because what happened happened and now we've got a young vibrant manager who's players will run through walls for him and this club and its fans. That's what my post was about. Ok there's a debate now in this thread about what should have happened and what could have happened and I respect people's views too. At the end of the day Wardy wasn't in the best frame of mind in his last season but that day in that phone call he used his experience and knowledge to make a decision there and then that DC would be the right man for Bristol Rovers future. He got it right short term and yeah it remains to be seen about long term. Some of you , T Bone comes to mind, still see the jury out on it and that's fair enough , he was manager when we got relegated and yes it does still hurt even for me , one of the "rose tinters" but when I think about where our clubs been going these last few years and how it's going now the tipping point of the see - saw was the moment Ward brought Clarke to this club. Ward didn't take us down Clarke didn't , it was a catalogue of errors one after another that did and like many gas heads before have said on here "we were relegated years ago we just didn't know it."

I have to agree with you, it was catalogue of errors that took us down and like you say JW has done us very well in spotting DC. My opinion is that is down to bad management to have let it get that bad, I'm not board bashing but somebody is in charge, well let's hope! I hope Darrell is here for many years to come with great success and we can only hope that the powers that be match his enthusiasm. UTG

Totally agree with your sentiments about DC and he will always be a legend in my eyes for getting a promotion that may have saved our very existence. The way he came to our club was completely random though imo.If he wasn't the manager of Salisbury at that time then he wouldn't be here now,and if DC had turned out to be another uncle buckle then John Ward would have been absolutely slaughtered for giving him the job on a spur of the moment phone call.It doesn't appear that any or certainly not much research went into DC's appointment so I see it as one of those rare occasions when luck and chemistry worked for us,we got lucky.
