FORMER Swansea City chairman Steve Hamer was at the centre of extraordinary boardroom scenes at the Liberty Stadium yesterday.
Hamer – a guest of former Football League chairman and current Cardiff City director Keith Harris at yesterday’s South Wales derby – was denied entry to the boardroom for 40 minutes before kick-off, on the 50th anniversary of his first ever Swans match.
But a Swansea statement last night put Hamer’s exclusion from the boardroom down to a “misunderstanding”.
And Hamer – Swansea chairman between 1997 and 2000 – admits he might now never return to watch his beloved Swans play at home.
Hamer said: “The incident has rather spoiled what should have been a great day for me.
“The day marked the 50th anniversary of the first time I saw the Swans, playing against Hull City, but this has left a bitter taste in my mouth.
“I’ve been to the Liberty when Swansea have played Colchester and Southampton and have not had a problem.
“I have been a lifelong supporter of Swansea City, but if you asked me now whether I want to return again I would have to say I don’t know.”
Neath-born Hamer was chairman of Swansea during difficult financial times for the club a decade ago.
After Hamer’s departure the club had to seek a Company Voluntary Arrangement to sort out its financial troubles – and were eventually taken over by controversial Australian businessman Tony Petty
Ironically, Harris was Football League chairman at the time of the CVA and Hamer praised his work in enabling Swansea to have a brighter future.
“Keith was a great chairman of the Football League and it’s to Keith’s credit that, out of loyalty, he stuck with me when I was refused entry to the boardroom.”
Hamer said he and Harris stayed in an “obscure guest room” at the Liberty Stadium for 40 minutes before moving onto the boardroom where they joined Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale.

Steve Hamer, who resigned from Swansea City in 2000, says he set up Prison Consultants after discussions with a convicted fraudster suggested there was a market for the new service.

Presume then that the Supporters Club retain an 8% stake in the club?

"We've been looking at other clubs in League Two and League One."
Why choose Rovers?
"The heritage that Bristol Rovers has... the potential here is enormous."
